Porsche Highlights: Monterey Car Week 2024

From auction cars to bespoke one-offs and big-ticket launches, there was no shortage of drama for Porsche lovers this year

Porsche has a long tradition of participating in the annual Monterey Car Week. One of the biggest car events on the automotive calendar. It dates back to 1950 when it was held for the first time, as a supplementary event to the Pebble Beach Road Race. Like other automakers, Porsche’s iconic sports cars were an expected sight at the Monterey Car Week, and this year, we got to see a great number of highly original, reimagined, and downright crazy builds, based on Porsche’s greatest sports cars ever made.

Among this year’s Porsche entries are cars that mark the return of legendary names in the automotive business, radical race cars for the road, built by known Porsche collaborators, and even super-exclusive, never-officially-made models, built by Porsche themselves, for special clients. Narrowing it down to just a few cars was a difficult and not very enjoyable task, but we chose these six models as the highlights of the 2024 Monterey Car Week.

Tuthill Porsche GT One

U.K.-based, Tuthill, is a long-term partner of Porsche. So when they decided to bring a modern homage to the iconic 911 GT1, you can bet it’s going to be epic. Rumors were circulating about Porsche building another mid-engine supercar, following the 918 Spyder, but apparently, Porsche left this to its partners. Tuthill’s modern iteration of the homologation special features a bespoke chassis, a full carbon-fiber body with front and rear clamshells, and a functional air intake on the roof.

The mid-engine supercar is about 1,000 pounds lighter than the current 992.1 Turbo S and packs nearly identical power. There is also a lightweight, Inconel exhaust for dramatic, flat-six sounds. Every now and then, one of the original Porsche 911 GT1s comes up for sale, and they usually go for a hefty sum. The Tuthill 911 GT1 design was done by former Singer designer, Florian Flatau, who was responsible for styling the Porsche 911 Dakar-rivalling Singer ACS.

Performance Specifications Tuthill Porsche 911 GT1
Engine 4.0-liter N/A or twin-turbo flat-six
Power 500 hp (N/A), 600 hp (twin-turbo)

BB Auto Porsche 911 Targa Hybrid

While Porshe already introduced hybrid powertrains to the 911, BB Auto did something even cooler for its return to the automotive scene. The company was originally founded in 1974 and specialized in modifying various Porsche models, including air-cooled 911s. This 1986 Porsche 911 Targa is a tribute to BB Auto’s original “Rainbow” Turbo Targa, built in collaboration with Polaroid, for the 1976 Photokina photography show. Hence the rainbow accents.

Similar to what Singer does with its lineup, the BB Auto 911 Targa Hybrid is based on a Porsche 964. While it still features an air-cooled engine by Ed Pink Racing, it also packs an electric motor. Yes, this classic Porsche is a hybrid, but it also has a G50 manual transmission, making it the first 911 Hybrid to feature a stick shift.

Performance Specifications BB Auto Porsche 911 Targa Hybrud
Engine 4.0-liter N/A flat-six + 1 e-motor
Power 550 hp (110 kW e-motor)
Torque TBA
Transmission 5-speed manual
Drivetrain Rear-engine, RWD
Curb weight TBA
0-60 mph TBA

RUF Rodeo

Lately, we have seen a lot of companies, Porsche included, attempt to recapture the rally heritage of the rear-engine sports car from Germany. While they have all succeeded, RUF Rodeo is the latest (so far) interpretation of a Porsche 911 that combines supercar performance and off-road capabilities.

Deep beneath RUF’s clever engineering, the Rodeo is based on a 964. However, it now features a bespoke, carbon-fiber monocoque, and an in-house-built, water-cooled, turbocharged flat-six, mated to a manual transmission. Power goes to both axles with help from limited-slip differentials and double-wishbone, pushrod suspension front and rear that allows for 9.6 inches of ground clearance. The price? $1,250,000.

Performance Specifications RUF Rodeo
Engine 3.6-liter, turbocharged flat-six
Power 610 hp
Torque 516 lb-ft
Transmission 6-speed manual
Drivetrain Rear engine, 4WD
Curb weight 2,756 lbs
0-60 mph TBA
Top speed 155 mph

BB Auto 1979 Porsche 928 Targa

Most companies reimagine the 911, but there are a few that explore different models of the German sports car manufacturer. While the most recent example of a reimagined Porsche 928 is Nardone’s resto-mod, BB Auto reimagined the front-engine Porsche 928 way back in 1979. As part of BB Auto’s return to the automotive industry, they have brought out the 928 Targa alongside the 911 Targa Hybrid (also on the list).

The BB Auto Porsche 928 Targa is based on a 928 S, which means it has a 4.7-liter V-8 engine. The 928’s T-top featured overhead buttons similar to an aircraft, and two removable panels that could be stored in the trunk. The hatchback rear end was completely redesigned, which is arguably the most controversial decision. It is unknown how many 928 Targa conversions were made.

Performance Specifications BB Auto Porsche 928 Targa
Engine 4.7-liter, N/A V-8
Power 296 hp at 5,900 RPM
Torque 284 lb-ft at 4,500 RPM
Transmission 5-speed manual (dog-leg 1st gear)
Drivetrain Front engine, RWD
Curb weight approx. 3,450 lbs
0-60 mph  6.2 seconds
Top speed 155 mph

Porsche 911 "Edith" Rock Crawler

Back in December 2023, Porsche proved you don’t need a rugged SUV to climb the highest volcano in the world. Edith is a specially-built Porsche 992 Carrera 4S that runs on e-fuel and can go where no other sports car can. Endurance racer, Romain Dumas, drove upto to an incredible 22,093 feet with “Edith”, setting a new world record for vehicles.

Porsche did this to celebrate 40 years of the Carrera 4 – its first all-wheel-drive 911. The bodywork has been heavily modified with a carbon-fiber wide-body kit. The suspension allows for 13.7 inches of ground clearance. The stock transmission has received lower gearing, which explains the low top speed.

Performance Specifications Porsche 911 "Edith" Rock Climber
Engine 3.0-liter, twin-turbo flat-six
Power 443 hp
Torque 390 lb-ft
Transmission 7-speed manual
Drivetrain Rear engine, 4WD
Curb weight TBA
0-60 mph TBA
Top speed  60 mph

Sonderwunsch Porsche 911 (993) Speedster

Officially, Porsche never put a 993 Speedster into production. Only one 993 Speedster was ever produced from the ground up and it was a Birthday gift to "Butzi” Porsche, the man who designed the original 911. The few other 993 Speedsters were all conversions, most of which were done by independent builders or other Porsche 911-centric companies like Guntherwerks. That said, Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program opens new possibilities for customization.

Renowned Italian designer and car collector, Luca Trazzi, recently approached the German carmaker with a very special request – to make another Porsche 993 Speedster. Porsche obliged, which is how we got to see this modern take on the Porsche Speedster, finished in Otto Yellow. Unlike other 993 Speedsters, this one features a unique interpretation of Porsche’s four-point LED signature. Like other 993 Speedster conversions, this example started life as a 911 Cabriolet, and Porsche 964 parts were used.

Performance Specifications 1995 Porsche 911 (993) Speedster
Engine 3.6-liter, air0cooled, N/A flat-six
Power 285 hp at 6,100 RPM
Torque 250 lb-ft at 5,250 RPM
Transmission 5-speed manual
Drivetrain Rear engine, RWD
Curb weight  2,950 lbs
0-60 mph  5.0 seconds
Top speed  171 mph
