Hailed by purists as the mecca for air-cooled 911s, this year's L.A. extravaganza stretches far beyond the main October 5th event
by Khris Bharath on September 23, 2024, 07:00Look, I’m not going to sugarcoat it: Luftgekühlt 10 is a must-attend event for any self-respecting Porsche enthusiast. This year, with Luftgekühlt 10 marking the 50th anniversary of the 911 Turbo, you just can’t miss out on this one. Mark your calendars – October 5th at the Universal Studios Backlot in L.A. Trust me, you won’t want to miss this.
It’s hard to believe it all started a decade ago in a Venice Beach parking lot. From those humble beginnings, Luftgekühlt has now exploded into a global phenomenon, drawing Porsche fanatics, not just from across the nation, but from around the world. Nearly twenty major events later, the sense of community here is unrivaled. This year, though, they say it’s all about the 911 Turbo but I wouldn’t be surprised at all, to see other kinds of Porsches (beyond the air-cooled examples - which is what Luftgekühlt is about), including the water-cooled variety show up in and around the venues.
Luftgekühlt 10 Is Shaping Up To Be Epic
Now Imagine a sea of 911 Turbos, with everything from originals and modified monsters alike. If I were you, I’d be particularly excited to see the legendary Vasek Polak Racing Porsche 934 (#0179), the 1976 Trans-Am champion. It is one of several cars, that represents Porsche’s racing pedigree and the brand’s enduring motorsport dominance.
While the iconic model, which debuted at the Paris Motor Show on October 3rd, 1974, changed the game for Porsche for decades to come, the show-stopper for me this year will be the Martini Racing Team’s 917k from 1971, now with the Revs Institute, who are all about preserving the future of iconic race cars from the past. Beyond these racing legends, you will also get a chance to take a close look at the evolution of the 911 Turbo. Think flared fenders with the iconic air intake and the unmistakable "Whale Tail" spoiler.
But Luftgekühlt 10 is so much more; a full-blown weekend immersion into Porsche culture. The festivities kick off with a pre-party at Gunther Werks on October 3rd, followed by a Rise & Shine gathering at Race Service in L.A. the next day. The main event at Universal Studios is the crown jewel, but there’s also a special celebration planned at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Think cocktails, car stories, and the chance to connect with fellow Porsche people.
But if you’re looking for some driving thrills? The Mobil 1 Air-Cooled Caravan will take you on a scenic tear through L.A., culminating in a Cars & Coffee event at Porsche Santa Clarita. It is this very blend of social gatherings and exhilarating drives that makes Porsche ownership so special. It’s about the community, that shared passion, and the joy of experiencing these incredible machines, out on the open road.

Now it comes as no surprise to me, that this annual event has grabbed the attention of big names. Porsche Classic themselves are launching their ORIGINALE 10 line Magazine here, and Meguiar’s (not sponsored, but a big fan of their car care products) will also be on-site to provide information on keeping these beauties looking their best. Although Early Access tickets have already sold out, General Admission tickets, costing $95 are still available at the time of writing. Clearly, tickets are flying off the shelves, so if you’re a Porsche fanatic like me, you better act fast.
