The Gunther Works GWR where the R stands for race is the highly anticipated reimagining of the Porsche 911 (993), which is all set to make its global debut on August 16, 2024. After seven years of development, this model signifies a significant evolution in the Gunther Works lineup, incorporating insights from previous offerings like the 400R, Speedster, and Turbo models, to deliver a vehicle that excels in mechanical, aerodynamic, and powertrain advancements.

Performance and Engineering Innovations

At the core of the GWR is the most advanced naturally aspirated engine ever produced by Gunther Works in collaboration with Rothsport. Where most modern 911s, with the exception of some GT models, pack a turbo-charged powertrain, the GWR features an N/A 4.0-liter Quad Cam Twin Valve flat-six engine revs up to an insane 9,000 RPM, generating over 500 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque. With a total weight of approximately just 2,400 pounds, the GWR achieves an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 4.8 pounds per horsepower, marking a 25% improvement over the original Porsche air-cooled 993 remastered by Gunther Works. To give you some context, the lightest 992 generation 911 (S/T) weighs 3,042 pounds.

The GWR features a cutting-edge slide valve system that enhances throttle body technology, allowing for unrestricted airflow at wide-open throttle. This innovation, combined with a newly engineered intake manifold and custom engine shroud, significantly boosts cooling efficiency. The integration of lightweight titanium components in the valvetrain system further reduces engine inertia, optimizing performance.

The Design Philosophy

Gunther Works wants to retain the analog driving experience of the old-school 911s while preserving its very own attributes. The GWR’s design is a seamless blend of classic and modern elements. The extensive use of lightweight carbon fiber in the body not only contributes to weight reduction but also enhances the vehicle’s aesthetic appeal. The aggressive cutaways and wide arches accommodate substantial superwide tires, ensuring both performance and visual impact.

Finished in the stunning shade of Marina Bay Blue, this particular example’s bodywork is characterized by its aerodynamic features, including an aggressive front splitter, an S-duct in the hood, the louvers on the front fenders, and new LED headlights that appear to draw some inspiration from Porsche’s four-point principle. The aerodynamically optimized lightweight magnesium wheels, which can be equipped with optional Aero discs( my favorite design detail on this car), and the ducktail spoiler further enhance performance while maintaining a striking appearance.

Inside the GWR, the focus on driver engagement is paramount. The cabin boasts high-quality materials, including Alcantara and anodized finishes, creating a luxurious yet functional environment. The six-speed manual gearbox caters to purists, preserving the tactile connection that many enthusiasts these days increasingly want to cherish.

The interior is designed for personalization, with each of the 40 builds featuring a bespoke exterior and interior tailored uniquely for its owner. Gunther Works offers a configurator that allows customers to select various options for colors, materials, and specifications, ensuring that no two vehicles are alike. The new carbon fiber dashboard and sporty bucket seats reflect a modern approach to luxury and functionality, while the functional and no-nonsense aesthetic emphasizes this resto-mod 993’s performance-oriented nature.

Summing Up The Gunther Werks GWR

The Gunther Works GWR represents a remarkable achievement in automotive design and engineering. In his first-look video linked above, Shmee150 says that the GWR is essentially a blend of a 911 GT3 RS and a Porsche cup car in the body of a 993 chassis road car. By merging the classic elements of the 993 with cutting-edge technology and materials, Gunther Works has created a vehicle that is a nod to both nostalgia and modern performance. As the GWR prepares for its debut at the Quail at Monterey Car Week, I’m sure it’ll have enthusiasts and collectors alike talking about it, even so, if you’re a fan of the air-cooled variety. No word on pricing yet, but given that previous examples from Gunther Werks have sold for over a million dollars, this bespoke 993 won’t be any different.
