Two Macans, two different underpinnings, two separate fanbases; which compact Porsche crossover would you choose if you have a sub-90k budget?
by Amreetam Basu on November 13, 2024, 06:00Porsche pulled off a real surprise move when they showed off the Macan EV in January 2024. While this new all-electric Macan is inevitably the future and is here to stay, for the time being at least, instead of ditching the old gas-guzzler, the German automaker has decided to keep it around (until 2026)! This is a great strategy, given how the EV market has cooled off lately. The Macan after all is consistently one of Porsche’s best-selling models.
This way, Porsche offers choice and can continue to please a wider demographic. Want the latest and greatest tech, a super-sleek design, and that eco-warrior vibe? The Macan EV is calling your name. But if you’re all about that classic engine roar and the thrill of burning gas, and don’t want to deal with EV charging or range anxiety, then the gas Macan is still here for you. Porsche is basically saying, "Hey, we get it, everyone’s different. Choose your own adventure!"
So, to help you decide which Macan to choose, I’ve compared the 2025 Macan 4S Electric against the gas-powered range-topping Macan GTS. Both compact crossovers are under $90,000, but the 4S Electric is an EV with more modern Porsche tech, while the Macan GTS is just the good ol’ Macan, but a more spruced-up and potent variant if you will. So, let’s dive in to see how these two compact Porsche crossovers stack up in a head-to-head comparison.
Key differences: 2025 Porsche Macan 4S Electric Vs. 2025 Porsche Macan GTS
It’s wild to think that Porsche is still selling the gas-powered Macan, which first hit the scene way back in 2014! Sure, it’s gotten some updates over the years, but it’s nowhere near as modern as the all-new Macan EV. From the get-go, the Macan 4S Electric looks like it’s from the future, rocking Porsche’s latest design language that we first saw on the Taycan.
That sleek front end with those Taycan-inspired four-point LED headlights and the coupe-like roofline in the back give the Macan EV a seriously sporty vibe. Additionally, it comes standard with 20-inch wheels, which is perfect. (Don’t bother upgrading to the bigger 21- or 22-inchers; they’ll just make the ride harsher, the tires noisier, and kill your range—and who wants that in an EV?) But don’t get me wrong, the gas-powered Macan GTS still looks pretty sharp with its 21-inch wheels, quad exhaust pipes, and 911-like headlights.
Inside, the Macan 4S Electric feels way more upscale and modern, thanks to all its fancy tech. You’ve got a 12.6-inch driver’s display and a 10.9-inch touchscreen for all your infotainment needs. Also, you can even add a 10.9-inch touchscreen for your passenger! Just like in the Cayenne, Panamera, and Taycan. Now your co-pilot can enjoy their own entertainment, too.
The Macan GTS, on the other hand, feels a bit stuck in the past. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well-built and all, but that analog-digital instrument cluster and the older Porsche operating system just scream "yesterday." Some people might dig that old-school vibe, but let’s be real, it’s gonna feel dated in a few years.
But when it comes to practicality, the Macan EV takes the cake. Not only do you get a 3.4-inch longer wheelbase, which translates to more legroom for the rear seats, but you also get 19.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, plus an extra three cubic feet in the frunk! The Macan GTS meanwhile only gives you 17.2 cubic feet in the back. And here’s the best part: the Macan 4S Electric is actually $4,100 cheaper than the Macan GTS! What a steal!

Performance: 2025 Porsche Macan 4S Electric Vs. 2025 Porsche Macan GTS
Being the upper mid-spec variant, the Macan 4S Electric is quite the performer. Hardware-wise, it features dual electric motors, one on each axle. Together, the setup produces 509 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque. But keep in mind, you’ll only hit those numbers when you use launch control or the push-to-pass function. By default, the electric motors push out 442 horsepower and 578 pound-feet of torque, making it more potent than the gas-powered Macan GTS. Powering the e-motors is a 100 kWh battery pack, which is expected to return an EPA-estimated 288 miles on a single charge. It’s not the best range in the lineup. Should you need more range, check out the base Macan EV, which can manage just over 300 miles on a single charge. Efficiency and coefficient of drag obviously play a big role in maximizing range for an EV and with the Macan Electric, you’re looking at 0.25cd versus 0.35cd for the gas model.
The 2025 Macan GTS’s 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 produces 434 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed PDK automatic transfers power to all four wheels. Sure, the numbers might not be as flashy as the Macan 4S Electric, but there’s something special about driving the V6-powered Macan GTS. It’s more than just crazy acceleration; it’s about the feeling. Also, the GTS’s sports exhaust system occasionally leaves pops and bangs.
In terms of acceleration, the Macan 4S EV is quite ahead of the top-spec gas-powered Macan GTS. Porsche quotes that the 2025 Macan 4S Electric can do 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. In the case of the Macan GTS, Porsche estimates it to do the same in 4.3 seconds. We all know how Germans love understating their vehicle’s performance. According to Car and Driver, the Macan GTS can do 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, making it almost a second quicker than what Porsche quoted.
So, I think the Macan 4S Electric should perform better than 3.9 seconds to 60 mph, as Porsche estimates. However, the difference shouldn’t be as much as you’d think when compared to the Macan GTS, because while the Macan 4S Electric pushes out more power, it’s 869 pounds heavier than the Macan GTS. Additionally, the Macan GTS is faster at 169 mph top speed, whereas the Macan 4S Electric tops out at 149 mph.
Additionally, the Macan GTS actually has some better chassis components. Both the Macan 4S Electric and the GTS have adaptive air suspension, but the GTS gets bigger brakes – 15.3 inches up front compared to 14.7 inches on the Macan EV. The steering feel on both should be Porsche-sharp, but owing to the weight distribution, the battery pack, and the lower center of gravity, the Macan Electric should feel more planted when compared to the more agile and nimble Gas GTS.
