Prioritizing gas mileage and range while not being underpowered, this frugal Porsche SUV aims to hit the sweet spot in the Cayenne lineup
by Amreetam Basu on September 22, 2024, 07:00Porsche’s best-selling model, the Cayenne SUV, recently got a facelift for the 2024 model year, bringing a much sharper and modern look, inspired by the Taycan electric sedan. The update also brings significant changes to the interior, thanks to a fully digital instrument console and an optional 10.9-inch passenger-side display.
But amongst all the models in the refreshed Cayenne lineup, it’s the E-Hybrids where things get interesting. You’ve got three options to choose from: the standard E-Hybrid with a turbo V6, the sportier S E-Hybrid, and the top-of-the-line Turbo E-Hybrid that packs a twin-turbo V8 with up to 729 horsepower!
But in my quest to find the most efficient Cayenne on sale today, I want to focus my attention on the underdog in the lineup, the base Cayenne E-Hybrid. Not only does it outperform most entry-level gas-powered Cayennes, but it should be the most fuel-efficient of the bunch. And at just under $100,000, it’s a tempting way to get into the Porsche SUV game without having to frequent the gas station for fillups. So is the base model 2024 Cayenne E-Hybrid the right pick for you? Let’s break down its fuel efficiency and all-electric range to help you decide.
2024 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid: Powerful Yet Fuel-Efficient
The base plug-in hybrid Cayenne, packs a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, carried over from the pre-facelift model. But a new, more powerful electric motor sits between that V6 and the eight-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Combined, the hybrid powertrain pushes out an impressive 463 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque through all four wheels. However, it’s important to note that the facelifted Cayenne E-Hybrid pushes out eight more horses than before but produces 37 pound-feet of torque.
The new electric motor is powered by a 25.9 kWh battery pack, up from the pre-facelift model’s 17.9 kWh unit. Since the Cayenne E-Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid SUV, you can drive it in all-electric mode for an impressive 56 miles, which is a significant jump from the earlier claimed 27-mile range. However, in the real world (as you’ll see in the video below), the Cayenne E-Hybrid should go as far as 45 miles at an average speed of about 22 mph with the air-conditioning turned on. This should be more than ideal for short stints around town. The top speed in EV mode is limited to 84 mph.
As a PHEV, the Cayenne E-Hybrid’s 25.9 kWh battery pack benefits from self-charging using the combustion engine (up to 80%) and recuperation from the e-motor. But if you wish to charge the battery-pack it at home, Porsche offers a faster 11 kW AC charger as standard. It will take a little over two hours to fully charge the battery to 100%. Installing a Level 2 wall charging system could cost around $2,000.
As of today, we don’t have the exact EPA-rated MPGe figures of the 2024 Cayenne E-Hybrid, which is surprising because they are available for the gas-only models (18 mpg combined). However, the outgoing model was rated at a staggering 45 MPGe in the city and 48 MPGe on the highway. With those numbers, you could do around 800 miles on the highway in hybrid mode, which is phenomenal for a mid-size luxury SUV. We’ll have to wait and see how the updated Cayenne E-Hybrid performs in the EPA tests, but I’m sure it will be more efficient than before.
