With the intent of soon bidding farewell to the internal combustion engine that once defined it, Porsche finally dragged its best-selling Macan into the electric age last year. But if things don’t go to plan, I have a feeling that the gas-powered variant which is set to be discontinued in 2026, may stick around. The recent shift in market dynamics, not favoring EVs much has warranted Porsche to realign its EV strategy with rumors of some models that were destined to be electric even to take the hybrid route, or even better an ICE retrofit. Meanwhile, Tesla’s super-popular and newly unveiled Model Y, now under the "Juniper" moniker, is all set to continue to assert its dominance in the electric crossover market, already racking up 50,000 orders within the very first day.

While the sales of EVs have experienced a slowdown in recent times, automakers continue to develop products until the market catches up. In the meantime, I’m curious to see how a brand like Porsche adopts to these challenges particularly when its facing competition not just in China (they shut nearly 29% of dealerships in 2024), but also in key markets like the United States and also in its home turf, once again from a looming threat of Chinese EVs.

Porsche is continuing with the gradual electrification of its lineup, albeit at a slower pace. The fate of the Porsche 718 is one of the more controversial aspects of the German automaker’s EV strategy. While declining EV sales have caused Porsche to backtrack on its electrification efforts, a fully electric 718 is still happening. However, the EV variant of the celebrated mid-engine sports car will be delayed due to battery issues. This prompted Porsche to keep the ICE-powered 718 for a while longer, although not in all markets. It seems the same thing that happened to with the Macan EV is happening with the 718 EV. The Macan EV was also delayed due to battery issues and it seems the theme continues after the model’s launch. Are we seeing the same thing with the Porsche 718 EV? Below, we are looking at some facts as well as what we know about Porsche’s battery issues and how it could affect the production model and launch date.

Porsche sports cars like the 911 in particular, have a faithful following. With a legacy spanning over 60 years and counting, the car itself, and the people who drive them possess very specific traits. Whether we are talking about one of the many 911 versions, the EVs, or the SUV offerings, Porsche’s performance models are some of the most capable, pound-for-pound. There have been many Porsche 911 versions that have achieved legendary status and have even overshadowed other decent Porsche offerings. Then, there is the infamous brand tax, which is present on, both the new stuff, the classics, and limited-edition models, of which there are plenty on this list. While most of these models are deserving of their reputation, their exclusivity has priced them out of reach for all, but the most avid car collectors. This isn’t just limited to the 911 though and some Porsche models aren’t as deserving of the hype. Now, I know that including some of the models in this list may be controversial, but in my opinion, here’s why these are 10 of the most overrated Porsche models.

In my opinion, it’s the Porsche name that signifies the ultimate driving experience (sorry BMW), and when it comes to SUVs, although the OG X5 predates the original Cayenne, with its borderline sportscar-like dynamics it was Porsche that truly took the idea of the performance SUV mainstream. Let’s also not forget, that the Cayenne’s debut back in 2002 played a huge role in saving Porsche from bankruptcy.

Porsche’s dealership network in the U.S. evolved significantly since the brand first entered the market in 1950. The partnership between Max Hoffman and Ferdinand Porsche marked the beginning of Porsche’s American presence. Hoffman, a New York-based salesman, was pivotal in establishing the brand’s reputation, despite Porsche’s smaller engines and higher prices compared to rivals. His marketing efforts, highlighting the 356’s performance and quality, led to early success. By 1954, Hoffman was selling 11 cars per week, contributing to Porsche’s increasing presence in the U.S.

As a best-selling Porsche model in the United States, the Macan nameplate needs no introduction. In the decade that it has been around, the Macan has won a lot of praise for being one of the most dynamically capable models, in the luxury compact SUV class. For 2024 though, the Macan receives a total reboot as it goes fully electric! If you’re still not ready to embrace electrification, Porsche will thankfully continue to offer the gas-powered model until 2026. The old four-cylinder/V6-equipped Macans are great for many reasons. First, they are affordable. Secondly, they are more practical than the similarly priced 718 Cayman, thanks to the crossover boy style and third, they drive like a Porsche.

With 2025 around the corner, Porsche finds itself in a bit of a pickle. Their lofty plan of 80% of sales to come from EVs by 2030 seemed a tad bit too ambitious. The lukewarm reception to electric vehicles, particularly in key markets like the U.S. and parts of Asia has forced a re-evaluation of strategy at Stuttgart. I mean just look at sales of the all-electric Taycan sedan for example, which still isn’t seeing much demand even after the recent 2024 facelift. Also, things like range anxiety, charging infrastructure woes, and the lack of soul in many EVs have conspired to dampen the enthusiasm amongst the wider public. While I applaud Porsche’s initial goals, it’s clear that the EV market isn’t quite ready to fully embrace the electric future.

While the Porsche name is almost immediately associated with sleek sports cars carving corners up a canyon or a racetrack, did you know that the German brand also has a rich history of off-road dominance? Porsche reignited the Dakar spirit with the 992.1 911 Dakar. This lifted, somewhat all-terrain 911 is a tribute to those iconic Porsche rally cars from the 80s, bringing that off-road capability to a whole new generation of Porsche enthusiasts. While the production of this (2,500) limited-run model has finally come to an end with the Sounderwunsh model, given its popularity, I wonder if it could be the start of something bigger and if Porsche should actually consider expanding the Dakar nameplate and offer more rugged, adventure-ready vehicles. To find out, I looked up some rugged Porsche models and concepts from the past, and current production models to explore the possibilities of a Dakar family of Porsche models.

Porsche pulled off a real surprise move when they showed off the Macan EV in January 2024. While this new all-electric Macan is inevitably the future and is here to stay, for the time being at least, instead of ditching the old gas-guzzler, the German automaker has decided to keep it around (until 2026)! This is a great strategy, given how the EV market has cooled off lately. The Macan after all is consistently one of Porsche’s best-selling models.

No Porsche can truly be called slow, but then again, no Porsche is truly affordable either. The sports carmaker has long traditions in motorsport, which has nicely transitioned into its road cars. While much can be said about the Porsche 911, you need to put together a hefty sum of money if you want to buy one. The base-model 992.2 Carrera starts at $122,000 and special-edition models like the GT3 RS are over $240,000. Not long ago, you could get behind the wheel of a 911 for under $100,000, but that is no longer the case with the 992.
