Beyond the sub-$100k sticker price, find out why these Porsche models are an excellent starting point to some serious speeds
by Dimitar Angelov on October 23, 2024, 09:00No Porsche can truly be called slow, but then again, no Porsche is truly affordable either. The sports carmaker has long traditions in motorsport, which has nicely transitioned into its road cars. While much can be said about the Porsche 911, you need to put together a hefty sum of money if you want to buy one. The base-model 992.2 Carrera starts at $122,000 and special-edition models like the GT3 RS are over $240,000. Not long ago, you could get behind the wheel of a 911 for under $100,000, but that is no longer the case with the 992.
But what if your budget tops out at $100,000? Fear not as Porsche’s more affordable models also pack a punch, and are comparable to or greater than many modern sports cars. While there are fairly limited options available, when it comes to fast Porsche sports cars under $100,000, there are still enough offerings to choose from. I took the most powerful variants of each Porsche model that fit the criteria. Yes, the Porsche market is a volatile one and you have the inevitable dealer markup to content with. But it is something that mostly affects far more exclusive and limited-run models, rather than Porsche’s more mainstream range. With that, here are the fastest Porsches that have a starting MSRP under $100,000 going from most expensive to the cheapest.
5. Porsche Taycan: $99,400
The Porsche Taycan barely fits the bill with a starting price of $99,400, but I decided to include it for the sake of diversity on this list. You will have to settle for the sedan variant in its weakest form, but even then, it packs a very respectable 402 horsepower. The sleek body of the Taycan features a drag coefficient of 0.22 Cd – one of the best in the industry.
Combined with the 89-kWh battery, this contributes to an EPA range of 318 miles combined. Traditionally, EVs impress with acceleration rather than top speed, but the base Porsche Taycan will still get up to 143 electronically-governed miles per hour, with relative ease.
Performance specifications | Porsche Taycan |
---|---|
Engine | Single electric motor |
Power | 402 horsepower |
Torque | 302 pound-feet |
Transmission | Single-speed automatic |
Drivetrain | Rear engine, RWD |
Curb weight | 4,607 pounds |
Battery | Li-Ion 89 kWh (gross) |
Range | 318 miles (EPA) |
0-60 mph | 4.5 seconds |
Top speed | 143 mph |
4. Porsche Macan GTS: $90,995
If you are a fan of internal combustion engines and don’t want anything to do with electrification, the Macan S offers a decent amount of grunt for way less than $100,000. The ICE-powered Porsche Macan will stick around for a few more years, despite the fully electric version of the SUV already being on sale, so now is the time to get one.
The ICE Macan lineup starts at $64,895, but you can pick up the range-topping Macan GTS for $90,995. After 2021, there is no more Macan Turbo apart from the Macan Electric Turbo, which came out in 2024. Aside from the 911, which went hybrid, Porsche seems to be keeping the GTS trims as traditional as possible. The Macan is no exception as it features a potent V-6 without any hybrid assist.
Performance specifications | Porsche Macan GTS |
---|---|
Engine | 2.9-liter, DOHC, twin-turbo V-6 |
Power | 434 horsepower at 5,700-6,600 RPM |
Torque | 405 pound-feet at 1,900-5,600 RPM |
Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
Drivetrain | Front engine, AWD |
Curb weight | 4,321 pounds |
0-60 mph | 4.3 seconds |
Top speed | 169 mph |
3. Porsche Macan Electric 4S: $86,895
Porsche’s first fully electric SUV packs a punch in any of the four trims currently available. Almost all variants of the EV Macan can be had for under $100,000 except the range-topping Turbo model. Luckily, the Porsche Macan Electric 4S offers most of what the Turbo has for nearly $20,000 less.
The dual-electric motor setup means all-wheel-drive capabilities and a 100-kWh battery translates to an EPA range of 308 miles – 20 more than the Macan EV Turbo. The 4S model starts at $86,895, and with a top speed of 149 mph, the electric Porsche SUV should be quick enough for most.
Performance specifications | Porsche Macan Electric 4S |
---|---|
Engine | 2x e-Motors |
Power | 516 horsepower |
Torque | 605 pound-feet |
Transmission | Single-speed automatic |
Drivetrain | Front and rear-mounted e-Motors, AWD |
Curb weight | 5,170 pounds |
Battery | Li-Ion 100 kWh (gross) |
Range | 308 miles (EPA) |
0-60 mph | 3.9 seconds |
Top speed | 149 mph |
2. Porsche 718 Cayman S: $86,795
Like other Porsche models, the 718 is going fully electric. The ICE-powered Porsche 718 will be on sale through 2025 when it will be completely replaced by the new EV variant. Until then, you can still get the 718 with a variety of boxer engines. Sadly, if your budget tops out at $100,000, the flat-four-powered 718 Cayman S would have to suffice.
It is not a slow car by any means, it just doesn’t have the iconic soundtrack of the flat-six we are used to. On the plus side, the 718 is one of the most balanced, lightweight sports cars you can buy and a smaller engine means less weight behind the driver. The 718 Cayman S will set you back $86,795, which is just $12,000 more expensive than the base model, and nearly $15,000 more affordable than the GTS 4.0. However, since we’re also talking about top speeds, at 177 mph the Cayman S is also the fastest car on this list.
Performance specifications | Porsche 718 Cayman S |
---|---|
Engine | 2.5-liter, DOHC, turbocharged, flat-4 |
Power | 350 horsepower at 6,500 RPM |
Torque | 309 pound-feet at 2,100-4,500 RPM |
Transmission | 6-speed manual/ 7-speed PDK automatic |
Drivetrain | Mid-engine, RWD |
Curb weight | 3,053 pounds |
0-60 mph | 4.2 seconds |
Top speed | 177 mph |
1. Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid: $86,695
If you want to keep things under $100,000, there is only one Cayenne model you can buy off the showroom floor. For 2025, the base-model Porsche Cayenne offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain, revolving around a V-6. This versatile version of the Cayenne will set you back $86,695, which makes for a buyer’s dilemma between that and the Macan EV 4S that’s also on this list.
Porsche did something brilliant with the Cayenne GTS, but that one is going to cost you over $126,000. The base Cayenne PHEV gets you straight-line performance that isn’t far from the GTS and the ability to drive nearly 46 miles on electricity alone. If you want to know how to get the best experience out of your Porsche SUV, here are some must-have options you need to tick from the Cayenne configurator. If you use a 230 Volt, 32 amp connector, and the optional 11kWh charter, the battery gets fully charged in 2.5 hours instead of 4.
Performance specifications | Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid |
---|---|
Engine | 3.0-liter, DOHC, twin-turbo V-6 + 1 eMotor |
Power | 463 horsepower |
Torque | 479 pound-feet |
Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
Drivetrain | Front engine, rear e-Motor, AWD |
Curb weight | 5,346 pounds |
Battery | Li-Ion 25.9 kWh (gross) |
Electric Range | 46 miles |
0-60 mph | 4.7 seconds |
Top speed | 158 mph |
