Could The Upcoming Porsche 718 EV Share The Fate Of The Macan EV?

There could be a chance for the ICE-powered 718, but it might come in a different format

Porsche is continuing with the gradual electrification of its lineup, albeit at a slower pace. The fate of the Porsche 718 is one of the more controversial aspects of the German automaker’s EV strategy. While declining EV sales have caused Porsche to backtrack on its electrification efforts, a fully electric 718 is still happening. However, the EV variant of the celebrated mid-engine sports car will be delayed due to battery issues. This prompted Porsche to keep the ICE-powered 718 for a while longer, although not in all markets. It seems the same thing that happened to with the Macan EV is happening with the 718 EV. The Macan EV was also delayed due to battery issues and it seems the theme continues after the model’s launch. Are we seeing the same thing with the Porsche 718 EV? Below, we are looking at some facts as well as what we know about Porsche’s battery issues and how it could affect the production model and launch date.

Could This Upcoming All-Electric Sports Car Be A Potential Porsche 911 Rival?

After having taken the mass market EV segment by storm, it appears that China is now poised to take on the electric sports car market next

While EV hypercars haven’t exactly lit the market on fire (I’m looking at you Rimac Nevera), EV sports cars might just be the category to watch out for. Think about it, Porsche is grappling with supply chain issues for its upcoming 718 EV, and the 911 EV is still some time away. Meanwhile, Tesla’s Roadster seems like a distant dream at this point. But China? China is eating everyone’s lunch. Now, I’ve ridiculed some of their past creations for being copycats but having driven a Chinese EV myself I have to admit, that the Asian giant has come a long way not just in terms of coming up with some truly unique and original products, but also in terms of innovating across all verticals of its domestic auto market.

Porsche Boss Oliver Blume Talks Electrification, Flexibility, And What's Next For The German Brand

In an interview with Porsche's Christophorus magazine, Blume shares details about some exciting upcoming developments

Oliver Blume, Porsche’s Chairman of the Executive Board, is one of the few automotive leaders who isn’t afraid to make bold moves in a rapidly changing industry. In an insightful interview with Porsche’s Christophorus magazine, Blume pulled no punches about Porsche’s strategy for the future. The key takeaways? Porsche is doubling down on electrification, staying flexible with drivetrains, and betting on synthetic fuels to ease the transition to electric mobility. Here’s why this strategy may either make or break the brand in the coming decade.

Is The Porsche Taycan Going To Suffer The Same Fate As The 928? - image 198308

Is The Porsche Taycan Going To Suffer The Same Fate As The 928?

There are certain analogies between the 928 and Taycan's production cycles, and here's why it may spell trouble for the EV sedan

Between trying to stick to the 2030 electrification plans and keeping the internal combustion engine alive, Porsche has made some weird decisions of late. EV demand has decreased, prompting a few strategy changes from the German automaker. The all-electric Taycan in particular was affected by this market shift, as the performance EV went from being one of the most popular Porsche models to now suffering declining sales. Global Taycan sales have dropped by almost 50 percent during the first nine months of 2024 and this makes me draw parallels with another Porsche model from the 1980s that started out strong but ended up being axed due to slow sales. The 928 suffered a similar fate during the second half of its production cycle. Porsche had big plans for the 928 and its derivatives, which never saw production. All this begs the question: is the writing on the wall for the Porsche Taycan EV? There is more to suggest that this is the case and I am going to share all we know so far.

Why A 718 Hybrid Is The Need Of The Hour For Porsche - image 197252

Why A 718 Hybrid Is The Need Of The Hour For Porsche

With Porsche bracktracking its 2030 all-electric EV strategy and the Panamera and Cayenne retaining ICE power, does an ICE (hybrid) 718 make sense?

Like several other automakers, Porsche devised a strategy for electrification. Originally, the plan was for Porsche to electrify 80 percent of its model lineup by 2030. That said, the automotive industry is a dynamic place and things often change at a rapid pace. Demand for EVs has slowed down, forcing many automakers, Porsche included, to rethink their long-term strategies. The Porsche Taycan marked great success in its early years, but global sales of the EV model have dropped by 50 percent, during the first three quarters of 2024.

Fastest New Porsches Under $100,000

Beyond the sub-$100k sticker price, find out why these Porsche models are an excellent starting point to some serious speeds

No Porsche can truly be called slow, but then again, no Porsche is truly affordable either. The sports carmaker has long traditions in motorsport, which has nicely transitioned into its road cars. While much can be said about the Porsche 911, you need to put together a hefty sum of money if you want to buy one. The base-model 992.2 Carrera starts at $122,000 and special-edition models like the GT3 RS are over $240,000. Not long ago, you could get behind the wheel of a 911 for under $100,000, but that is no longer the case with the 992.

Porsche Sedan Battle: Taycan Or Panamera? People on Reddit Have Spoken - image 195255

Porsche Sedan Battle: Taycan Or Panamera? People on Reddit Have Spoken

Porsche's decision to simultaneously sell two sedans in a market dominated by SUVs seems odd, but it turns out there are some pretty compelling reasons behind this strategy

Despite Porsche being one of the most iconic sports car manufacturers of all time, most of the company’s offerings these days are geared towards luxury and daily usability. What was once a company focusing on high-performance models and motorsports, now has one of the most versatile lineups in the industry, made up of sedans, SUVs, and also wagons. This includes the likes of four-door sedans like the Panamera and Taycan. Both share plenty of traits and with the next-generation Panamera going full EV, this begs the question, which one should you choose?

Go Big Or Go Home: Spec'ing A $160k Porsche Macan Electric

Maxing out Porsche's configurator, here's what nearly 60k in optional extras on a Macan Electric Turbo gets you

With the all-electric Porsche Macan now officially on sale and starting to hit U.S. dealerships, I wanted to take the opportunity to spec out the most expensive Macan EV possible. So I fired up the configurator and selected the top variant of the four available models (Base, S, 4S, Turbo), which is the Macan Electric Turbo, and went to town. Now before you judge me for the bold PTS color choice, (Speed Yellow - 0UB in case you were wondering), I want to clarify that this was just an exercise. I’m personally far more conservative and would choose something more understated and go with something like silver or navy blue at best. But with this one, I’ve tried my best to select the priciest options available in my quest to get a ballpark figure of the most expensive Macan electric on sale today, and here’s what I found.

2025 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Vs. 2025 Lotus Emeya

Lotus is seemingly out of its element with an all-electric sedan, but has the British company inadvertently created a Taycan killer?

Porsche’s Taycan is one of the most hyped-up and popular performance EVs on sale today. By Q4 of 2023, Porsche had sold 136,000 Taycans cumulatively. The EV sedan bumped Porsche sports car sales by 3.3 percent, despite the German brand’s overall sales having dropped by 12 percent compared to 2022. While the electric vehicle market is currently experiencing a slowdown, it hasn’t stopped other manufacturers from entering the performance EV segment with their own offerings. Take for instance Lotus, a brand typically known for its lightweight sports cars. Still, now the British carmaker is giving us the Emeya – a large, EV performance sedan that wants to steal potential buyers, from the likes of the Taycan and Tesla Model S.

Lotus Theory 1 Teased: A Porsche 718 EV Killer In The Making?

Find out what Lotus might have in store for the all-electric successor to the legendary Lotus Elise

Remember that Top Gear test from 2008 where Jeremy Clarkson compared a Lotus Elise to the OG Tesla Roadster? Yes, the same one that led Elon Musk to sue Clarkson. Well, it appears to be coming full circle for the Elise, because we’ve got our first hint of the mysterious Lotus Theory 1, the rumored all-electric Elise, how ironic. This is a car that could shape up to be a formidable rival to the upcoming Porsche 718 EV. Lotus’ marketing chief, Qiao Xinyu, dropped a shadowy image of the Theory 1’s rear end. Sure, while the image doesn’t really reveal much, that prominent wing hovering over a sculpted rear-end, the sleek taillights flanking the classic Lotus badge, and the aggressive diffuser all but shout "sports car." But this electric silhouette throws a bit of a curveball. While the Eletre and Emeya have their sporty bits, that rear end wouldn’t be caught dead lumbering on an SUV or a four-door.

This Wingless Porsche Mission R Is One That Deserves To Exist In Real Life

The 2021 Mission R is already pretty spectacular to look at, but this rendering imagines the all-electric concept as an underground machine

Modern digital tools and computing power, give pretty much anybody (with some level of skill of course) the ability to manipulate images like never before. A.I. has only taken that narrative further, with endless ways to come up with silly stuff. But it can also be put to good use as we have here with this rendering based on the already stunning 2021 Mission R concept car, this time sans the wing. But here’s why I think this one is a bit more special when compared to previous Mission R renderings that cropped up online.

Piëch GT: A 1,000 Horsepower All-Electric Grand Tourer In The Making

Set to hit the road in 2028, could this flagship two-door coupe from Germany, beat the Porsche 911 EV to market?

The Porsche-Piëch connection is a deep-rooted family relationship that goes back decades and has shaped the history and success of the Porsche and Volkswagen automotive groups. Now, for those of you who haven’t heard of the Piëch name before, the late Dr.Ferdinand Piëch was one of the most influential automotive personalities of the 20th century. He was involved with the motorsports division of Porsche and Audi in the 1970s and ’80s and was instrumental in proliferating technologies such as Quattro and TDI. As CEO of Volkswagen in the 1990s, Piëch was also responsible for acquiring iconic brands such as Bugatti, and Lamborghini into the wider VW Group portfolio. Despite these phenomenal achievements, no car ever bore the Piëch name, until recently.

Porsche Says No To Gimmicks: The German Automaker Isn't Interested In A Simulated Manual For Its EVs

While the prospects of a fake manual transmission making it to a future all-electric Porsche look bleak, there may still be some hope left for the stick?

Things are always dynamic in the automotive industry and even carmakers like Porsche, hellbent on staying true to tradition, have to resort to unconventional methods to keep some of its most iconic models around. Porsche hasn’t given up on the internal combustion engine and it will continue to give us potent internal combustion powerplants, at least, until 2030. With electrification being the main agenda of many legacy automakers (and more than a few young companies), some of them are trying to make EVs more fun by incorporating traits from combustion-powered vehicles, such as manual shifting.

2025 983 Porsche Boxster EV: Everything We Know So Far

Set to make its debut in 2025, we take an up close look at some of the latest spy shots of Porsche's all-electric sports car to uncover more details

Spy shots of the upcoming all-electric 718 Porsche Boxster EV (983) are nothing around, and we’ve seen test mules doing the rounds around the Nordschleife and down in the Alps for a while now. However, with the launch date closing in, I felt now would be a good time to take a closer look and do a run-down about everything that we can see on the car, with the help of some close-up shots from Instagrammar and spy shot photographer: Stéphan Barral.

Porsche's Upcoming All-Electric Panamera Will Sell Along Side Gas And Hybrid Models - image 191632

Porsche's Upcoming All-Electric Panamera Will Sell Along Side Gas And Hybrid Models

While the Panamera will continue to offer a variety of powertrains, here's how Porsche plans to distinguish the electric variant from the Taycan

Remember that whole "fully electric by 2030" strategy that Porsche implied a few years back? Yeah, they’ve already backtracked on that, with the slowdown in the EV market. It turns out that convincing everyone to ditch gasoline is harder than Porsche had anticipated. Shocking, right? In yet another development, Michael Steiner, Porsche’s R&D head honcho, told Autocar that the Panamera isn’t ditching gas and fancy gasoline-electric combos anytime soon. An electric Panamera is still coming, but those hoping for an all-electric future for the four-door Sportback might need to adjust their expectations. Frankly, I saw this one coming, given the growing popularity of hybrids off-late and how they’re now considered cool.

Making The Case For A Modern-Day Compact Porsche 911: A Return To Its Sports Car Roots - image 191423

Making The Case For A Modern-Day Compact Porsche 911: A Return To Its Sports Car Roots

From potential power plants to design choices and market positioning, here's what a smaller and nimbler 911 could do in the modern-age

Like it or not, electrification is coming and Porsche like every other automaker out there, will need to adopt. But despite its expanding electric model lineup, (think electric Macan and the upcoming Cayman/Boxster EV and Panamera EV), the brand recently backtracked on its over-optimistic electric vehicle sales targets, and it appears that Porsche is once again committed to internal combustion engines for the foreseeable future. The Cayenne, for example, is expected to retain an internal combustion option until at least 2030. As for the 911, the T-Hybrid system introduced on the 992.2 Carrera 4 GTS, combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor and seems like a strategic move to extend the life of internal combustion engines for Porsche. But to me, it appears to be an excuse to delay the 911 EV. We all know that it will be the last model in Porsche’s lineup to go fully electric. Having said that, here’s why a compact 911, could serve as the base for both a smaller displacement combustion engine and an all-electric powertrain.

Lamborghini Temerario Vs. Porsche 911 Turbo S (992.2)

As Lamborghini and Porsche embrace hybrid tech across their lineups, find out how the upcoming 911 Turbo S could differ from Lambo's latest supercar

Porsche and Lamborghini are both under Volkswagen Group ownership and yet, what the two brands do with their sports cars has little to do with the mother company’s resources. Sure, the more mainstream models may rely heavily on VAG tech, but both sports car manufacturers do their own thing when it comes to their range-topping, high-performance models. Lamborghini recently introduced the Temerario – the company’s second hybrid model after the flagship Revuelto. Porsche also recently introduced hybrid powertrains to the 911, with the 992.2, mid-cycle refresh.

Here's Why The Varta Acquisition Is A Strategic Bet That Could Pay Off For Porsche's EV Future

This collaboration aims to harness Varta's battery expertise to power Porsche's upcoming high-performance electric cars

Porsche has announced a strategic partnership with Varta AG, a German battery manufacturer. Even as the broader EV industry faces headwinds, this counterintuitive strategy reflects Porsche’s long-term vision of dominating the high-performance electric vehicle segment. I say counterintuitive, because Porsche backtracked on its statement from 2020, that it wanted 80% of its sales to come from EVs by the end of the decade. Regardless, this move could shake things up for Tesla and other EV players.
