Set to hit the road in 2028, could this flagship two-door coupe from Germany, beat the Porsche 911 EV to market?
by Amrit Balraj on September 10, 2024, 20:00The Porsche-Piëch connection is a deep-rooted family relationship that goes back decades and has shaped the history and success of the Porsche and Volkswagen automotive groups. Now, for those of you who haven’t heard of the Piëch name before, the late Dr.Ferdinand Piëch was one of the most influential automotive personalities of the 20th century. He was involved with the motorsports division of Porsche and Audi in the 1970s and ’80s and was instrumental in proliferating technologies such as Quattro and TDI. As CEO of Volkswagen in the 1990s, Piëch was also responsible for acquiring iconic brands such as Bugatti, and Lamborghini into the wider VW Group portfolio. Despite these phenomenal achievements, no car ever bore the Piëch name, until recently.
Ferdinand Piëch’s son, Toni Piëch, along with industrial designer and entrepreneur, Rea Stark Rajcic, founded Piëch Automotive back in 2017 in Switzerland. They made waves at the 2019 Geneva Auto Show when they introduced the world to the Mark Zero, a 600-horsepower two-seater electric supercar. Unfortunately for us, the Mark Zero never became a reality. However, the founding duo has now partnered up with Ralph Illenberger, former Head of Powertrain Engineering at Aston Martin, and Tobias Moers, former CEO of Aston Martin and Mercedes AMG. With that, Piëch Automotive has re-introduced its flagship model in a new and improved avatar, which is quite striking. Currently, we just have a clay model by British automotive designer David Seesing, but the GT One will eventually be a 1000+ horsepower 2+2 seat grand tourer mated to a two-speed transmission, with dual motors.
- The GT One is expected to cost $200,000 and go on sale in 2028
- Piëch Automotive plans to make 2000 units in the first year of production
- The GT One will have an output of 1000+ horsepower and 800 foot-pounds of torque.
The GT One Looks Spectacular And Has The Performance To Show For It
The design of the GT One reminds me of British sports cars from Lotus or Aston Martin, with clean-cut body lines, a sharp front end with razor-slim headlights, and substantial air intakes. However, the taillights look like they were borrowed from a Hyundai, and look out of place on the concept, hopefully, we will see a different iteration in the end product. According to Tobias Moers, Piëch Automotive will offer extensive customization options for color and trim options for the GT One. He claims that no two GT Ones will look the same, perhaps hoping to compete with Porsche’s PTS color portfolio. I expect the body of the final production version will be all carbon fiber.
The prototype is set to hit the test track late next year and the company claims that the car will have a top speed of 187 MPH and a 0-60 mph time of 2.6 seconds. These performance numbers will be thanks to two electric motors, each with 503 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, for a combined output of 1000+ horsepower and nearly 800 pound-feet of torque. These motors will be sending power to individual rear wheels via the company’s proprietary Dual2Drive system. Like the Taycan, the GT One will also feature a two-speed transmission.
A 90 kWh battery pack offers a range of 312 miles while offering fast charging via a 500-kW fast charger. The high-performance battery pack will be located on the carbon fiber base of the car and consist of 16 battery modules, each with 312 individual cylindrical cells. The battery pack will also feature a revolutionary cooling system that involves oil circuits, water circuits, and backup chilling systems to ensure proper cooling during high performance. With performance numbers like these, the GT One is setting its sights squarely on the Porsche Taycan, will it be a worthy competitor in an increasingly competitive space?

The GT One Will Go On Sale In 2028 In Limited Numbers
On the R&D side, the company is partnering with Bosch Engineering Group to handle the integration of hardware and software using a central control unit and a high-speed CAN bus. As for production, the company is also partnering with Canadian-based automotive supplier Multimatic, with the hopes of making an initial batch of 2,000 cars by 2028. Multimatic of course was also responsible for building the Gen-II Ford GT. The GT One will not be cheap with prices expected to hover around the $200,000 mark, and with all the promised customization options, expect the prices to go up much higher. The company also has plans to make a performance-oriented SUV. (Think Macan EV). Unlike many startups, Piëch will focus on traditional sales channels, initially appointing luxury dealers in the Middle East and Europe, followed by North America, and Asia.
With such esteemed names and tech backing it, I expect the GT One will be a special EV, however, the performance-EV market might be a little overcrowded by 2028. With companies like Lotus, BYD, and Lucid already having 1000+ horsepower offerings, will the GT One have the chops to stand out? Bringing back Porsche into the equation; where the Taycan is a four-door sedan, the GT One is a two-door coupe. Considering we’ll only see a 911 EV past 2030, Piëch might just beat Porsche with a flagship all-electric coupe if everything goes to plan. But the question remains, will it live up to the Piëch name, given its history and legacy? Time will tell.
