A Head-Turning 911 Bag That Defies The Norm

If understated and sophisticated is your thing, this unconventional-looking bag-pack shaped like a 911's rear end might be a tough sell

While 3D software has allowed us to let our imaginations run wild in the virtual world, 3D printing has opened up a whole new dimension with the kind of stuff that we can actually bring to life in the real world. Just about anyone with a basic 3D printer these days, can now create some truly complex and sophisticated forms, all from the comfort of their homes. It appears that’s exactly what this 911 bag seen on Facebook is all about. Sure, you probably already know about Porsche-branded bags, and depending on the quality and price, it could be from the German brand’s lifestyle division PD or from collaborations with a sportswear brand like Puma or Adidas. But the one you see here is unique because it looks like the rear end of an actual 911. Let’s dig into some of the details about what makes this particular Porsche bag different.

A Unconventional 911 Bag

Ironically, the 3D model prototype of this bag can quite literally be called a body-in-white. It consists of the various bits and pieces that make up the backpack. First off, you have the main shell with features like the vertical strakes that generally sit above the rear-air intake, found entry-level 911 Carrera models. Strangely enough, there’s even a rear-wing, with one commenter even funnily talking about downforce. Other defining features include details like the reflectors on the rear bumper. The pre-finished stage shows off some sort of silver fabric layer, (designed to mimic paint I suppose) mounted onto the shell. With a dash and splash of color, you can see Porsche’s signature full-width LED light bar and brand scripting. I suppose that if there’s one thing missing, it’d have to be a plate.

Brand caché is everything these days, particularly if you’re a Porsche fanboy, and pretty much anything with the Porsche name is bound to sell. Beyond the Porsche child seats and car covers to Porsche-branded roof tents, you have an extensive section of lifestyle and merchandise that you can buy directly from Porsche. It all depends on how much you’re willing to spend. Just like this 911 bag, we recently did a feature about a Porsche 911 GT3 stroller and a Porsche 2.7 RS lamp and I’d be lying if I said that they weren’t popular.

Personally, I’m a bit more understated and I’d be hard-pressed to rock something like this. In stark contrast to this ingenious creation, I have a 1:18 scale model of a Porsche 550 Spyder, a Le Mans Inspired 917 poster with some Porsche script, and a blueprint of a 1972 Targa in my office. Now that’s more my style. As someone who spends a significant amount of time in front of a screen every day, a wide-screen monitor from PD would make a great addition to my space. But coming back to bags, what did you think about this aerodynamic 911 backpack? Would you consider showing up with one of these at your local Porsche event? Whether people dig it or not, you’ll most likely turn heads. Priced at 120 bucks, would you choose this Facebook find, over a more conventional backpack from Porsche Design that starts from around $160 (after discount)?
