Available in a variety of colors and body styles, are these 911-inspired Racing Slippers a bold statement or a fashion faux-pas?
by Khris Bharath on August 22, 2024, 11:00When you Google “car shoes,” you typically get results for driving shoes— that is, footwear designed for comfort and control while driving. As a proud owner of Porsche design sneakers from Puma myself, you can say I’m a fanboy, but I recently stumbled upon a very different kind of Porsche-themed shoes on the web. Forget your fancy driving loafers, gearheads. We’re diving headfirst into questionable car merch with these gloriously awful Porsche 911-inspired footwear.
Yes, you read that right. We’re talking full-on, miniature 911s strapped to your feet, aptly called ’Racing Slippers’. While they’re made from soft plush materials and are designed to be warm and fuzzy, they come with questionable curves, "windows," and what I can only assume are tiny, non-functional wheels. I know this may be subjective, but I get the feeling that these shoes are a celebration of everything excessive and slightly embarrassing about car culture.
But hey, for the low, low price of $29.99, you can truly own your inner 12-year-old who desperately wanted those Hot Wheels-themed sneakers. They even come in multiple "body styles" (because apparently a 911 can be a fluffy shoe now?) so you can match your questionable footwear to your questionable taste.
Some models even boast "iconic details" like a plastic nub meant to evoke the legendary ducktail spoiler of a 930 RSR. Look, I love a good Porsche as much as the next person (probably more, honestly). But these shoes? These are the automotive equivalent of wearing a shirt with a picture of your car on it. A bold statement, to be sure, but one that might leave you longing for the days of tasteful car keychains.
So, the next time you’re at Cars & Coffee, (yes, I get that these Racing Slippers are geared for indoor use, but imagine the number of heads you can turn in public) take a good, long look at your footwear choices. Unless you’re rocking these glorious monuments to automotive excess, you might just be a little too basic. But just in case this fluffy 911-inspired footwear is a bit much, Porsche themselves just dropped some limited-edition sneakers as a tribute to 50 years of the 911 Turbo and in typical Porsche style, they’re not cheap at 169 Euro ($188).
