As the only one in existence, find out why this bespoke 993 Targa is undervalued and a golden opportunity for collectors
by Khris Bharath on August 13, 2024, 08:30This is a 1994 Porsche 993 reinterpreted by the world-renowned restomod brand Kreinzel. Now live on the SBX Cars auction platform owned by renowned YouTuber Supercar Blondie, this 993 Targa is a one-of-one creation, with just 223 miles at the time of writing this article. I say one-off because it has some truly unique traits you won’t find on a standard 993 Targa that Porsche made back in the day.
- One-of-a-kind 993 built by Kreinzel for a VIP client
- Constructed from scratch primarily using original Porsche components
- Original 993 chassis and engine
- Equipped with a 3.6-liter flat-six engine producing 315 hp
- Odometer reading of 224 miles at time of cataloging
- Accompanied by Porsche technical certification
Here’s What Makes This 993 Targa Restomod Unique
Built on the foundation of an original Porsche 993 Carrera 2 Cabriolet, this bespoke 911 was crafted for a VIP client with over €350,000 ($383,000) invested solely in new Porsche parts. One of the most striking aspects of this restomod is its transformation from a Carrera into a Targa variant—a feat that Porsche never originally undertook for the 993 model in the traditional sense. For the 993 generation, Porsche chose to leave out the iconic Targa aluminum roll-hoop that had been around since the 60s. Instead, it had a fixed coupe-like side profile with a sliding roof. In fact, this was a trend that continued into the 911’s 996 and 997 generations and it wasn’t until the 991 that Porsche brought back the silver hoop.
As a result, to capture that OG Targa roll-hoop aesthetic, Kreinzel had to design the entire basic structure to convert the car from Cabriolet to Targa over a four-year period, resulting in a seamless blend of classic and contemporary elements. Now I didn’t find any information on what this transformation did to the weight of the vehicle. However, what I do know is that both the 993 Carrera 2 Cabriolet and Targa models weigh between 3,000 and 3,200 pounds. While this example now features a ragtop, the Cabriolet underpinnings mean it should on paper be heavier than a traditional coupe due to the additional structural reinforcements. But the primary focus with this restomod is getting that Targa look and the fact that they were able to re-engineer it is commendable.
The exterior of this 993 is finished in a stunning Metallic Dark Blue, perfectly complemented by 18-inch Fuchs wheels and a Clubsport exhaust system. Unlike the original 993 Targa, which did not feature the traditional silver Targa protective bar, this reinterpretation maintains a sleek and modern aesthetic. The interior is equally impressive, featuring exclusive customized Recaro sport/comfort seats finished in Cognac leather, offering a luxurious contrast to the exterior. Modern conveniences haven’t been left out either with everything from navigation to a high-fidelity audio system thrown in for good measure.
Under the hood, this bespoke Porsche is powered by a 3.6-liter flat-six engine making 315 horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual transmission. The car also boasts a four-piston sport braking system and adjustable suspension, ensuring that it delivers not only on looks but also on performance. As this particular car comes with Porsche technical certification, it can be maintained at any Porsche service center.
This 1994 Porsche 993 reinterpreted by Kreinzel with just 224 miles on the clock is truly a work of art. The current bid on SBX Cars is sitting at €92,000 ($100,000), which in my opinion is quite reasonable for what is a one-off bespoke creation. I would go as far as to say that it’s a bargain considering the nearly half-million Euro that was spent developing this example, and it is unlike any other 993 Targa on the road today. It’s not too far off from the $83,000 average price of a stock production 993 Targa. With its unique transformation, luxurious features, and potent performance, this car truly stands out and is an opportunity for serious collectors to get their hands on something truly special. What do you think of this incredible restomod? Would you like to see more unique transformations like this?
