How Berg Peaks Performance Beefs Up This Limited-Run Porsche Cayenne Transsyberia

The first-generation Porsche Cayenne has seen something of a resurgence in recent years. People are beginning to recognize that the sporty SUV is more than just a ’mall-crawler’. It has become a popular Overlanding and weekend off-roader, especially in the early iterations of the GTS trim. When the Cayenne first came out back in 2002, it divided Porsche purists, some of whom argued that the German brand should stick to building sports cars. In 2006, Porsche participated in the harsh Transsyberia Rally, to establish the Cayenne’s offroad chops for good. The Transsyberia Rally consists of nearly 7,000 miles of varied and unforgiving terrain stretching from the Russian capital, Moscow to Mongolia.

Porsche built a couple of rally-spec Cayenne Transsyberias based on the S trim which finished 1st and 2nd in the race with 28 teams. This win was a huge confidence booster for the brand and customers in the off-road competency of the Porsche SUV. The stock Cayenne needed just a snorkel, skid plates, off-road tires, reinforced pillars, and a winch to dominate this trans-continental dash. Consequently, the following year Porsche created 26 Cayenne Transsyberias to once again be entered into the competition through private teams. The SUV proved its indestructibility yet again by taking seven of the top 10 positions.

  • The Cayenne Transsyberia came out in 2009 as an homage to the original rally spec Transsyberia and was based on the GTS trim.
  • The Berg Peaks Transsyberia is a $125,000 Transsyberia build.
  • Only 6 examples of these special vehicles will be made

The Transsyberia Rally Was The Ultimate Test Of The Cayenne’s Capabilities

In 2009 Porsche developed 285 road-legal versions of the Transsyberia to celebrate their rally victories. The Transsyberia is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.8L V8 engine from the Cayenne GTS. You could opt for a 6-speed manual or a Tiptronic S 6-speed automatic transmission with a modified final drive ratio of 4.1:1, which sends power to all four wheels. Porsche’s Traction Management was programmed to send 62 percent of the power to the rear wheels. Additionally, the models had air suspension as standard with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). Other off-road features include underbody protection and an optional set of four auxiliary lights.

Berg Peaks Make The Transsyberia Cayenne Invincible Off-Road

Berg Peaks is a performance and accessories shop specializing mainly in Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche; based out of Denver, Colorado. They recently took a 2010 Transsyberia Cayenne and worked their magic, creating a one-of-a-kind off-road monster. It’s almost too nice to be taken off-road, but quite capable of doing so. YouTuber Harrison Schoen recently got to spend a day with Cole Evans from Berg Performance as they took some of their builds on some good old-fashioned trails, riding with friends. He walks us through what makes the Berg Peaks Transsyberia so special.

Exterior Modifications

  • Front and rear tubular metal bumpers.

  • Full Baja lighting package consisting of 14 Auxillary lights dispersed across the exteriors, all of which can be controlled via a Trigger wireless controller you can carry around.

  • Warn S10 EVO winch with a wireless controller.

  • Oz Racing 33x12.5’’ wheel and tire package.

  • Custom Berg Peaks 2.5-inch air suspension lift kit with air volumetric spacers that alter spring rates to make it more comfortable off-road. This suspension system is paired with Berg Peaks’ fully adjustable upper control arms for added sturdiness off-road.

  • Protective metal skid plates covering the engine, transmission, fuel, transfer case, differentials, and rock sliders to protect the sides from rock crawling.

  • Roof rack with integrated chaser light and accessories like MaxTraxx off-road recovery boards and shovel.

  • UltraSwing swing-out tire carrier

The rally-spec versions of the Transsyberias were stripped of all creature comforts and came with stainless steel floors and a bolted-on roll cage. The Berg Spec seen herem version however has been completely overhauled with lots of modern technology and equipment to make your next camping trip as comfortable as possible.

Interior Modifications

  • GTS Style heated steering wheel with automatic activation

  • Berg On-board computer which tracks total mileage, trip mileage, outside temperature, and other important information.

  • Apple CarPlay

  • Garmin dashcam

  • 5 Integrated 12 V charging outlets dispersed throughout the car, including one in the trunk area

  • Berg trunk MOLLE panels - Modular Lightweight Load-Carrying Equipment

  • CO² power tank for inflating tires

We get to see the Berg Peaks Trannsyberia deftly tackle a wide variety of rough terrain in the video, including steep rocky inclines and slush. The engine and output remain the same as the Transsyberia but it comes with the additional protection of Evans Waterless coolant. As far as performance enhancement goes, Berg Performance has installed its stainless steel tig-welded Cat-back exhaust and a dry air filter. All of this can be yours for $125,000 if you are looking for a competent luxury off-roader with a bit of history attached. If you are looking for something a little more pocket-friendly there is also Berg Peaks Project Warthog which is their custom build based around a 2005 Porsche Cayenne and will set you back, $90,000. Now that still seems like big money for what is a Gen-1 Cayenne. However, considering that these builds are based on a limited-run special edition model, they should hold their value.

You can also buy these components individually to kit out your Cayenne to make it cooler. Porsche has spent the last 20+ years making the Cayenne perform better on the road, which has made it a quite formidable off-roader. We wish Porsche had made a second-generation Transsyberia from the factory. At the other end of the spectrum, as a high-performance SUV, the Cayenne set a new record at the Nürburgring not too long ago with an impressive time of 7:38.925 minutes.
