Nürburgring Spy Photos Offer A Sneak Peek At The 2026 Porsche 911 GT3

While the highly anticipated 992.2 GT3 was spied with heavy camouflage, some of the aero upgrades on the upcoming model were easy to spot

The latest spy shots of the upcoming 2026 911 GT3 and Touring models are out and we have some juicy details to share. But to understand a bit more about the upcoming model, we need to look back at the 991 generation GT3 first. The last time that the .1 Gen to .2 Gen upgrade happened on the GT3, was back in 2017 after a three-year gap. The 991.2 received a bigger 4.0-liter engine derived from the Porsche 911 GT3 R and Cup racing cars with an output of 500 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. There were a lot of redesigned and tweaked bits to make it aerodynamically better, increasing downforce by 20% with no compromise on drag. But, the most endearing thing Porsche did was listen to their customer base and bring back the manual transmission as an option. You could also opt for the lightning-quick PDK, both systems sending power to the rear wheels. As seen on the 991 generation, given that it’s three years since the 992.1 GT3 came out, the timing for a .2 GT3 seems imminent.

  • The 992.2 Is Expected To Come Out In Early - Mid 2025
  • The last time we got a .1 gen to .2 gen upgrade was in 2017 with the 991.2.
  • The 992.1 was introduced in 2021,

What We Can Learn From The 992.1 GT3

Back in 2021, Porsche came out with the 992.1 GT3 with completely redesigned bodywork featuring a larger diffuser and a new four-way adjustable swan-neck rear wing. The new car had improved aerodynamics generating 848 pounds of downforce, 150% more than the previous generation. With the new wider body Porsche could use staggered wheel sizes with double wishbone suspension in the front and a multi-link rear axle. The 992.1 also featured a carbon fiber hood and roof with lightweight glass which brought the weight of the car down by 154 pounds. Other weight-saving measures that have been incorporated include the stripping of sound-deadening materials, which helped with shaving off another 4.2 pounds. You could also opt for the additional lightweight ceramic brakes saving you 40 pounds more.

The engine was retained from the previous model but it was tuned to make more power at 510 horsepower and 347 pound-feet of torque. Porsche also kept the manual transmission as an option along with the seven-speed PDK. The 992.1 was an instant success from its inception. The 992.1 GT3 can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 3.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 199 MPH. All of these upgrades added up and led to an incremental 13-second gain in the lap around the Nurburgring over the 991.2.

The Upcoming GT3 Seems To Take Inspiration From The 991.2 GT3 RS

Thanks to the sharpshooters at CarSpy Media we have a pretty good idea of what the 992.2 GT3 should look like. They have some great footage of the 4th generation prototype going around the Nurburgring. While we can speculate, that the 992.2 will not be leaps ahead of its predecessor visually, it will be advanced in the performance department. Despite the heavy camouflage, here’s what we can see from the spy shots:

  • Redesigned front fascia with a sharper front splitter for improved aerodynamics - this is the final design as we can see the GT3 nameplate embossed into the splitter.

  • The front opening for the center-mounted radiator is smaller, and it lacks the protruding molding from the previous generation. This opening is designed to channel more air to the radiator and brakes.

  • Front extractor vent inspired by the GT4 RS.

  • Redesigned back end with wider, toned-down diffusers in the back. From the 991.2 GT3 RS, the car gets two-air scoops on the rear deck lid.

  • A more subtle rear brake light.

  • Modified rear spoiler with sharper edges and inverted end plates from the 991.2 GT3 RS.

Spy photos of the new Touring GT3 which lacks the massive wing are also making the rounds around the web. There are no major changes visually, except it too seems to embrace the body lines with improved aerodynamics. Porsche has not confirmed if the manual transmission will be an option in the new GT3, with all of the prototypes thus far featuring the PDK transmission. We can only speculate based on forum chatter that the manual transmission will not be back owing to stricter emission laws from Europe. We also do not know the technical specifications of the new engine, but observing trends from previous generations we can expect a generous power bump. All we know for sure is that it sounds identical to the previous generation engine. According to Arc Driver, historically the .2 GT3 has received a 25% bump in horsepower, so expect a figure, somewhere in the ballpark north of 525 horsepower.

The question remains, when will the new GT3 hit dealerships? We know that Porsche is in the final testing stages of the model and we can expect to see it sometime in early to mid-2025. In the meantime, Porsche has new 911 trims up its sleeve - like the 2025 911 Carrera models.
