Porsche Taycan + Tesla Superchargers: A Match Made In Heaven?

With Tesla Superchargers opening up to Porsche EVs in 2025, is now the best time to pick up a Taycan?

The launch of the Porsche Taycan in 2019, was a pivotal moment in the brand’s history. It quickly became a sales success, exceeding 40,000 units delivered globally in both 2023 and 2022. This achievement positioned the Taycan as a significant player in the burgeoning luxury EV market, challenging established brands and inspiring others to step up their electric game. However, the Taycan’s significance goes beyond sales figures. It catalyzed Porsche’s electrification journey, paving the way for future electric models and demonstrating the brand’s commitment to a sustainable future. It isn’t just a luxury electric vehicle (EV) but is one that represents a statement from a legacy automaker that electric performance was here to stay.

The Taycan’s initial success was undeniable, setting a high bar for luxury EVs. Having said that, the EV industry has made some significant leaps in the past five years with models like the Lucid Air now offering up to 500 miles of range on a single charger. The Taycan’s appeal has waned as a consequence of its sub-250 mile range figures and the mass depreciation on EVs also isn’t helping either. Thankfully, things are about to look up for the upcoming 2025 Tacyan facelift. Here’s why.

A used Taycan Is Tempting But There’s A Catch

Now the second-hand market for the Taycan seems to be heating up with them depreciating at alarming rates. Fourwheel Trader did a detailed breakdown of the used Taycan market and gave us some solid numbers regarding their depreciation. The EV landscape has evolved rapidly post-pandemic. The initial excitement has stabilized as more options continue to flood the market. This, coupled with increased competition, has impacted used Taycan values, which have seen adjustments to reflect the changing market dynamics.

It is undeniable that the 2019 Porsche Taycan was a groundbreaking electric vehicle, but it had some common complaints from early adopters. It mainly revolved around issues with the charging with some base models reporting a mileage of less than 200 miles on a single charge. There are also some scattered reports of sudden drops in range offered by batteries, with cars that have run less than 40,000 miles. But if you’re worried about the battery holding its charge over time, Porsche does say that the Taycan should retain up to 70% of its original capacity for 8 years or 100,000 miles.

2025 Porsche Taycan offers more range and is available at a discount

Porsche has listened to this feedback and addressed it head-on with the new Taycan. Beyond the upgrades, the 2025 facelift model boasts a significantly improved range, offering peace of mind for those with "range anxiety." Taycans now offer significantly more range, making long-distance trips a possibility. The pre-facelift model had anywhere between 208 to 246 miles from a single charger. With the 2025 model seen above, range is up to 343 miles on a single charger, which is a significant improvement. This focus on range extension reflects Porsche’s commitment to staying competitive in the rapidly evolving EV market.

Furthermore, dealerships have implemented aggressive lease deals on 2024 and 2025 Taycans to lure new EV buyers away from automakers like Tesla, offering up to $4,500 to make the switch. Advertised lease rates could be as low as $1,197 per month with nothing due at signing (depending on model and dealer). Dealerships are also offering leases extending beyond the typical 36 months, such as a 42-month lease to lower the monthly payment further. By offering these attractive lease options, Porsche can entice new customers and potentially entice existing Taycan owners to upgrade to the newer, longer-range model.

Tesla’s expanding supercharger network

Until now, Tesla’s Supercharger network, known for its speed and reliability, has been exclusive to Tesla vehicles. But that’s changing as the EV auto giant opened up its DC fast charging tech to the wider auto industry in November last year. Ford, Rivian, and several VW Group brands including Porsche, will soon be joining forces with Tesla to adopt their NACS charging standard in North America. This means their new electric vehicles will be compatible with Tesla’s Superchargers, giving drivers more options and potentially reducing "range anxiety", because let’s face it, the likes of Electrify American and EV Go stations have far from steller reliability. NACS system is already considered the gold standard. Additionally, the decision by a major automaker like Porsche suggests a domino effect, potentially leading to wider adoption of NACS across the industry. This could simplify charging for EV drivers in the future, similar to how anyone can fill up a gas-powered car at any station.

However, it needs to be seen if Tesla can maintain the upkeep of its Supercharger Network as vehicles from other automakers begin using its charging network. Also, Tesla recently laid off its entire Supercharger team, responsible for designing and deploying the world’s largest fast-charging network. While Elon Musk says growth will continue, the move has analysts worried. Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network has been the backbone of the company and a key selling point, easing "range anxiety" for potential EV buyers. However, with rivals building their networks and Tesla’s plans to open theirs up to everyone, the advantage may lessen. This decision, along with cuts to Tesla’s public policy team, comes after a decline in sales and safety investigations surrounding Autopilot and the Cybertruck.

As for the Taycan, the value proposition in terms of running costs was already there. Things look favorable whether you’re going the new or used route in the form of discounts or depreciation respectively. Regardless of the path you choose to take, you’ll also finally be able to tap into Tesla’s supercharger network, allowing you to road trip with ease. If you get the new model, you also get the added benefit of even more range from the Taycan facelift, as well as superior charging speeds of up to 332 kW, which translates to 5-80% charge in about 20 minutes as seen in the video above from Edmunds. But if you’re still stuck with one from a few years ago with a CCS connector, DC fast-charging adapters will soon help you juice up at a Supercharger station near you. According to Out of Spec Reviews on YouTube Version 4 will also include a longer cable and some more updates for a more seamless integration of Tesla’s hardware with vehicles from other automakers.
