Boasting up to 938 HP and a 421-mile range, the impressive 2025 Taycan challenges the Tesla Model S, offering breathtaking acceleration and superior handling on twisty roads. However, an optioned-up Turbo S quickly reaches $250,000.
by Amreetam Basu on March 4, 2024, 07:19Most of us car guys have a love-hate relationship with EVs. While the impressive acceleration is undeniable, they often fall short of delivering the exhilarating driving dynamics synonymous with traditional sports cars. Meanwhile, some prioritize luxury and extended range instead. Porsche, renowned for crafting exceptional sports cars, embraces the electric revolution, focusing on delivering driving pleasure alongside environmental sustainability, and this commitment was clearly demonstrated with the launch of the Taycan in 2019.
Since 2019, Porsche sold close to 150,000 units of the Taycan, primarily in the U.S., the UK, Germany, and China. For a high-end luxury EV incapable of reaching 300 miles of range, the Taycan is simply a well-executed product where range concerns take a backseat for its buyers, who likely turn to Tesla for such needs. The Taycan instead targets EV shoppers who crave the driving abilities of a traditional sports car.
Five years in, we’re now treated to a facelifted version of the Taycan. Apart from the usual styling updates, there are quite a few significant upgrades under the skin. As standard, the Taycan now packs a larger 89 kWh battery pack, and if you opt for the Performance battery pack, Porsche will be happy to fit a significantly larger 105 kWh unit under the floor.
Power figures have improved across the trims, along with the increased battery capacity. We don’t have all the details for all variants yet, but we know that the base rear-drive-only model is claimed to be six-tenths of a second quicker than before. Even more impressively, the top-of-the-line Turbo S is the most potent Porsche ever made, pushing out a total of 938 horses!
However, there aren’t only gains in the performance department, and the change in pricing should be noted. Previously, the base RWD Taycan started at around $92,000. Now, post-facelift, it starts at $101,395. As for the range-topping Taycan Turbo S model, there is an increase of $14,445, making it a $210,995 super sedan.
So, will the 2025 Taycan finally unsee its biggest rival, the Tesla Model S? We will have to wait for the final verdict, but until then, let’s focus on the latest updates from Porsche in detail.
The perfected trio - more power, bigger battery, faster charging
Unlike the base rear-drive model, the majority of the Taycan trims come equipped with a thrilling dual-motor setup, one for the front axle and another for the rear, translating to impressive acceleration and dynamic handling, no matter which variant you choose.
While Porsche is yet to reveal all the horsepower ratings for the lower-priced trims, the top-dog Turbo S unleashes a mind-blowing 938 horsepower when you engage the newly introduced Push-2-Pass feature, churning out 94 extra horses for 10 seconds. This feature is inspired by Formula-E and is Porsche’s equivalent of the Boost mode found in most performance EVs.
Even without Push-2-Pass, you’re still looking at a mighty 764 horsepower with the Turbo S, guaranteed to quicken your pulse. And rumors suggest an even more powerful Turbo GT model is coming, potentially exceeding 1,000 horsepower!
To ensure all this power translates to a truly exhilarating driving experience, the Taycan features a two-speed direct-drive transmission. This plays a crucial role in the car’s lightning-fast acceleration and impressive range.
While Porsche keeps most performance-related figures under the curtain, the carmaker states that the base RWD Taycan can perform 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, six-tenths of a second quicker than before. On the other hand, the full-fat 938-horsepower Turbo S is estimated to clock 60 mph in 2.3 seconds. However, the claim might seem slightly too conservative since the outgoing Taycan Turbo S with 750 horses did the same in 2.4 seconds, in independent tests.
Taking the performance out of the equation, both the base and performance battery packs are getting an upgrade to their technology and capacity. While they still use lithium-ion cells, the composition now sports a higher nickel content (80 percent compared to 60 percent previously), allowing for increased energy density and faster charging.
These aren’t just theoretical improvements - both battery options are getting bigger and lighter. The smaller battery increases from 79.2 kWh to 89 kWh, and the larger one jumps from 94.3 kWh to 105 kWh. Even better, these new batteries weigh around 20 pounds less than the previous versions, making the Taycan even more efficient.
But the improvements continue beyond there. The ideal charging temperature for these new batteries is significantly lower, ranging from 59 to 73 degrees Fahrenheit, and this means you can charge the Taycan more efficiently in a wider range of conditions. Plus, the car’s improved thermal management system can quickly bring the battery to the optimal temperature, further speeding up the charging process.
If you frequently rely on fast-charging, you’ll be thrilled to hear that the Taycan now boasts a significantly improved charging speed. When connected to a compatible 800-volt DC fast charger, the Taycan can reach a peak of 320 kW, significantly reducing your charging time.
Even at lower temperatures, the Taycan charges efficiently, thanks to improvements in the battery technology. Additionally, the inclusion of a standard 150-kW DC/DC converter ensures faster charging on 400-volt networks, making it more convenient to top up your battery no matter where you venture on your travels.
The combination of enhanced powertrain efficiency and larger battery packs translates to impressive range improvements for the Taycan. While we await official EPA figures, European WLTP figures offer a glimpse of the good news to come. The rear-wheel-drive Taycan with the Performance battery now boasts a claimed range of 421 miles, a remarkable 108-mile improvement compared to the previous model. Even the powerful Turbo S sees a significant jump in range, going from 290 miles to 391 miles.
An uprated chassis for more focused driving
One of the things that truly sets the Taycan apart is its driving dynamics. All Taycan models are now equipped with adaptive air suspension as standard, offering a smooth and comfortable ride. But if you’re looking to take your driving experience to the next level, the optional Porsche Active Ride suspension, which debuted with the facelifted Panamera, is available for all AWD models.
This sophisticated suspension system uses hydraulics and active dampers to truly shine in its ability to balance comfort and driving dynamics. When you switch to a dynamic driving mode, the Porsche Active Ride suspension automatically adjusts to provide optimal road connection. It achieves this through a balanced distribution of wheel loads, ensuring a more connected and engaging driving experience.
Its sleek profile receives additional refinement
While the Porsche Taycan receives some styling updates, it retains its sleek and recognizable silhouette. Think of it as a familiar face with a few eye-catching new details. The first difference you might notice is the redesigned front end, with the fresh fenders seamlessly flowing into the new headlights, featuring high-resolution Matrix LEDs as standard and the iconic four DRL graphics reminiscent of modern Porsches. These headlights offer incredible detail and illumination, making nighttime driving a breeze.
Looking from the sides, you will notice a powered charge port, previously an optional fitment, now offered as standard. As for the wheels, the base RWD model comes standard with a set of cool-looking 19-inch aero wheels, but you have the freedom to upgrade to 20 or even 21 inches (if you don’t care about a slight drop in the range). The new wheel designs are not just aesthetically pleasing; they’re also engineered to minimize rolling resistance and improve aerodynamics, contributing to the Taycan’s overall efficiency.
Around the back, the taillights get refreshed, and the Porsche logo nestled within them receives a special upgrade. Now boasting a 3D glass look, the logo can even be illuminated for an extra touch of sophistication (available as an option).
But the updates go beyond aesthetics. The Taycan’s color palette now welcomes a range of captivating pastel hues, like Frozen Berry Metallic and Provence, offering a touch of personality to match your unique style.
More standard features than before
The 2025 Porsche Taycan isn’t just about stunning performance anymore; it’s also received plenty of updates inside the cabin. The base model now boasts door sill protectors in brushed aluminum, adding a touch of elegance as you step inside. Additionally, two new eco-conscious interior options are available, replacing traditional leather with high-quality Race-Tex microfiber and a stylish textile upholstery featuring wool and the iconic Pepita houndstooth pattern. For further customization, optional packages offer contrasting stitching and a wider range of seatbelt colors, including the new GT Silver option.
The new model brings improvements to the instrument cluster, central display, and optional passenger display. The user interface boasts additional functions, and Apple CarPlay integration is further enhanced for a seamless connection to your favorite apps.
On top of that, a new in-car video function allows you to enjoy video streaming under specific conditions, keeping passengers entertained on longer trips. For added convenience, a new control lever behind the steering wheel now controls the driver assistance systems, and a drive mode switch comes standard on all models, allowing you to tailor the driving experience to your preferences.
The general dashboard layout is the same as before. You get the curved 16.8-inch fully digital instrument console, a 10.9-inch touchscreen display for your infotainment duties, another portrait-style touchscreen for the HVAC system, and lastly, an optional 10.9-inch passenger-side display, which is shared with some of Porsche’s ICE-powered vehicles.
Whether you’re driving solo or with passengers, the Taycan prioritizes both comfort and safety. The standard Comfort seats offer eight-way power adjustment. While heating and ventilation are optional extras, the car now comes equipped with more standard features, including a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, and wireless charging for added convenience. Safety is also bolstered with the addition of lane change assist as a standard feature, offering peace of mind on your journeys.
The cargo space remains unchanged from previous models, offering a 2.9-cubic-foot frunk in the front and a 14.3-cubic-foot trunk in the rear, providing ample space for luggage and everyday essentials.

The upgraded sedan versions are scheduled to arrive at Porsche Centers in the U.S. from the summer, while the Cross Turismo models are expected to follow in the fall.
Globally, the sports car manufacturer has produced almost 150,000 examples of the Taycan. The most important individual markets for the Taycan are currently the US, the UK, Germany and China.
“We ushered in the new era of e-mobility with the Taycan at the end of 2019. It immediately proved to be a game changer and innovative pioneer in the e-vehicle segment,” says head of the Taycan model line, Kevin Giek. “We are now continuing this success story with the extensively updated Taycan. The model line has reached new heights in terms of performance, with exceptional driving dynamics and driving pleasure. At the same time, we were able to improve efficiency, range, day-to-day usability and comfort.”
Even higher performance
All updated models accelerate significantly faster than their predecessors. Two examples from both ends of the portfolio demonstrate this clearly: The rear-wheel drive Taycan sedan now sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, making it 0.6 seconds quicker than before. The new Taycan Turbo S sedan is now capable of reaching 60 mph in just 2.3 seconds, 0.3 seconds quicker than previously, making it the quickest production car Porsche has ever offered to date.
With the new push-to-pass function as part of the Sport Chrono package, a boost of up to 70 kW, depending on the model, can be called upon for 10 seconds at the touch of a button. The increased acceleration rates are generally the result of higher system output. For example, the base Taycan delivers 60 kW more than before. In the Taycan Turbo S, it’s an additional 140 kW when using Launch Control. This increases the system output of the top model to 700 kW/938 hp – making it the most powerful production Porsche to date.
Faster charging potential
The updated Taycan has the ability to recharge even faster than before: It can be charged at 800-volt DC charging stations at up to 320 kW under ideal conditions. That’s 50 kW more than before. The fast-charging window of the new performance battery has been significantly expanded. This means that high charging capacities can be sustained for longer periods of time, even at lower temperatures. Also, now standard is a 150 kW DC/DC convertor, which aims to optimize charging speeds on 400-volt networks.
Depending on an individual’s driving style, among other variables, this can reduce the time required to go from a 10 to an 80 percent charge compared to the predecessor car. Under ideal conditions, the updated Taycan takes just 18 minutes despite its larger battery capacity. The Performance Battery Plus now has a gross capacity of 105 kWh, increased from 93 kWh.
New active chassis
All updated Taycan models come with adaptive air suspension as standard. Additionally, the new Porsche Active Ride suspension can be ordered as an option for all models with all-wheel drive. This system offers an unprecedented bandwidth between driving comfort and driving dynamics.
The suspension keeps the body of the Taycan level at all times, even during dynamic braking, steering and acceleration. With a smooth ride, the system absorbs bumps almost completely. In dynamic driving situations, the Porsche Active Ride suspension aims for an optimal connection to the road thanks to a balanced distribution of wheel loads. If the appropriate mode is activated, the suspension can compensate for pitching and rolling motions in order to reduce the acceleration forces acting on the occupants.
Extensive efficiency measures
The simultaneous improvement of performance and efficiency is down to a number of factors: an advanced powertrain with a new rear-axle motor with up to 80 kW more power than its predecessor on all models, a modified pulse inverter with optimized software, more powerful batteries, revised thermal management, a next-generation heat pump and a modified recuperation and all-wheel-drive strategy.
The maximum recuperation capacity during deceleration from high speeds has increased by more than 30 percent from 290 to up to 400 kW. All variants now come as standard with aerodynamically optimized wheels and reduced-rolling-resistance tires. New 21-inch wheels and tires were specially developed for this purpose.
Significantly improved standard equipment
In the new 2025 Taycan models, the list of standard equipment is even more extensive than before. Lane Change Assist, heated steering wheel, Ambient lighting, electrically folding exterior mirrors with mirror surround lighting, Porsche Intelligent Range Manager (PIRM), a new cooling system, smartphone tray for wireless charging, electric charging ports on the driver and front passenger side and Drive Mode switch are all now standard features.
The entry level Taycan models are now also equipped with adaptive air suspension.. In addition to the upgraded equipment, the improved product specification includes a lighter battery with increased capacity.
Even more attractive design and extensive customization options
With new front- and rear-end styling with new headlights and taillights, the experts at Style Porsche have further honed the clean, pure design of the Taycan. The new front fenders and the flatter headlights give even greater emphasis to the width of the Taycan.
The new headlights feature high-resolution LED HD-Matrix Design look with detailed optics and now display the brand’s characteristic four-point graphics at night. The Porsche logo in the rear light strip features a three-dimensional, glass-look design. An illuminated version of this is available for the first time, featuring welcome/leaving animations.
Among other notable features, the accent color, Turbonite, makes the Turbo and Turbo S models stand out more distinctively from the other Taycan versions in both the exterior and interior. Several new colors for the Taycan also underscore the level of customization possible.
There have also been a number of upgrades in the interior. The base models now also come as standard with door sill protectors in brushed aluminum.
Two new leather-free interior options in Black and Black/Slate Grey are optionally available. These equipment packages dispense with genuine leather in the interior and instead feature the high-quality microfiber material Race-Tex as well as a textile material with wool content displaying the iconic Pepita houndstooth pattern. The seatbelts and contrast stitching are in GT silver. The new leather-free interior is available as an option for the base model and 4S as well as a no-cost option for the Turbo and Turbo S models.
Updated control and display concept
The instrument cluster, central display and optional passenger display feature an optimized user interface with additional functions. The mode switch on the steering wheel now comes as standard. For Taycan models equipped with the Sport Chrono package and the Performance Battery Plus, there is a special push-to-pass button on the mode switch.
Using the new control lever on the left behind the steering wheel, control of the driver assistance systems is even more intuitive. Apple CarPlay has been more deeply integrated into the vehicle displays and functions. The new In-Car Video function enables video streaming on the central display and the passenger display.
