Is This Upcoming Alfa Romeo EV A Macan Electric Killer In The Making?

The Stelvio and Macan went head to head in the gas age, and there could once again be a fierce rivalry between the two in the electric era

The Stelvio is Alfa Romeo’s flagship SUV and has been around since 2016 and recently got a facelift in 2023. Since its debut, it held the end of its bargain as a capable Italian crossover with compelling driving dynamics and ample luxury. However, it requires a new generation to showcase Alfa’s latest design language and more advanced powertrains. This paves the way for an exciting chapter: the arrival of an all-electric Stelvio. Now, there are many speculations on the web about the upcoming Alfa Romeo Stelvio EV, and some of them are very promising.

If you weren’t aware, Alfa Romeo recently debuted the Milano compact crossover in early 2024. However, the automaker had to rename the vehicle to Junior Veloce, citing an objection from the Italian government against using "Milano" or any other Italian word for a product manufactured outside of Italy. This was also due to the planned production of this crossover in Poland. With the Junior, it’s just the start of Alfa Romeo’s journey in the EV space. The next model to embrace electrification will be the Stelvio and based on what we’ve seen so far with the Junior already, it is already shaping up to look rather promising.

With the Stelvio’s arch-rival, the Porsche Macan, having successfully transitioned to a fully electric platform in its second generation, it’s obvious that the segment could see more fully electric luxury crossovers in the coming years. The forthcoming all-electric Stelvio has the potential to not only challenge the Macan Electric but also showcase the brand’s latest innovation in both luxury and performance. And from what I have for you today seems to look promising from a consumer’s point of view. Both the Stelvio and the Macan are still going head to head with their gas powertrains, and there could once again be a fierce rivalry between the two in the future electric arena.

Everything We Know About Stelvio EV

Alfa Romeo is part of the Stellantis Group, which means it stands to benefit from platforms developed across various brands in the automotive conglomerate. The Stelvio EV will underpin Stellantis’s STLA Large platform shared with the Dodge Charger Daytona, another Stellantis Group product. If you didn’t know, this platform can accommodate a 400-volt or an 800-volt charging architecture. But why is this a good thing? Alfa Romeo is a brand that’s all about the drive and stunning design. So using a muscle car platform would certainly help in the Dynamics department, wouldn’t it? The gas-powered Stelvio was based on the Giulia sedan platform.

As for how power figures, according to the CEO Jean-Philipe Imparato, the Stelvio EV could crank out about 1,000 horsepower. In an interview, he explained - "that’s the figure for the moment. If we can reach 1,000 PS then we’ll do it." However, he’s not sure if that’s the company’s or the consumers’ priority as of now. Now, 1000 PS translates to 986 horsepower Stateside.

For some context, that’s exactly the same output produced by the now-discontinued Ferrari SF90 supercar. So from Porsche’s POV, the all-electric Stelvio is already on the winning side in this department. Also worth mentioning is the possibility of Dodge’s eRupt transmission, which essentially simulated gear changes in an EV, all in a bid to improve driver engagement. Porsche has already confirmed that they won’t be going down this route.

Now, the battery pack that could power the Stelvio EV is a 118 kWh unit, the highest capacity available for the platform, but if they can pull off anywhere between 250 and 300 miles from a single charge, that would be rather impressive for an all-electric performance SUV. The 2025 Dodge Charger Daytona’s 93.9 kWh battery pack isn’t the most efficient and I think it won’t draw attention to the Stelvio EV.

A Threat To The Porsche Macan Electric?

The Macan Electric is so much better than the gas-fed Macan in almost every aspect: design, luxury, performance, and practicality. However, Porsche will kill the gas Macan by 2026, which is a bummer for ICE lovers. Apart from that, the Macan Electric is significantly more expensive than the gas Macan; we’re talking a$12,000, premium. So, from a value perspective, the new Macan Electric isn’t there yet, especially when compared to the gas Macan.

Side-by-side, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio EV should be significantly cheaper than the Porsche if it can be manufactured in the United States at Stellantis’ EV manufacturing facilities, and exported to Europe and Canada. To further elaborate on that, the Dodge Charger Daytona starts at $61,590, which is seemingly a good price for a luxury electric muscle car. However, given the premiumness Alfa Romeo offers over other Stellantis-owned brands, you can expect the Stelvio EV to start at around the $70,000 price point. Also, the current Stelvio Quadrifoglio, with the Ferrari-derived 505-horsepower twin-turbo V6, retails at around $95,000. So, you can expect a price bump to a little over $100,000 with the Stelvio EV Quadrifoglio, should it be named the same as its ICE counterpart.

However, the main reason why the new-gen Alfa Romeo Stelvio could ruin the Porsche Macan’s party is because of what it could pack underneath its skin. Stellantis has confirmed that the STLA Large platform can accommodate internal combustion and hybrid powertrains. This is huge, because, let’s say the electric vehicles under the conglomerate don’t work their best in terms of sales. If that happens then automakers have the flexibility of simply swapping out the EV components and stuff a good ol’ internal combustion engine.

This is something Porsche doesn’t have right now. The PPE (Premium Platform Electric) is completely EV-centric and given the changing market dynamics with the slowdown in EV sales, there are now rumors of potential ICE retro-fit on some upcoming Porsche models that were destined to be EVs. So, there’s a thin chance that Porsche can chuck a V6 under the hood and serve the Macan as an ICE option. But when the market does warm up to EVs again, I’m curious to see how these two electric crossovers fare against each other. Expect the Stelvio EV to debut sometime in early 2026. Watch this space.
