Spy shots captured at the Nürburgring reveal revamped (992.2) Porsche 911 Turbo prototype with some big changes
by Amrit Balraj on June 6, 2024, 20:00Spyshot photographers in Germany recently spotted the next-generation Porsche 911 Turbo going around the legendary Nürburgring. Porsche recently revealed a refreshed 911 (992.2), introducing the first-ever hybrid 911, the Carrera GTS, with a new 3.6L single-turbo engine. Specifications for the base Carrera and Carrera GTS were confirmed, but details on higher-performance models remain shrouded in mystery. The prototype spotted is the 992.2 Turbo, featuring the active rear spoiler instead of a traditional wing. This, combined with the camouflaged air intakes, bumpers, and rear haunches, suggests significant exterior changes are in store.
This news reignites hope for a return of the manual Turbo, which hasn’t been seen [since the 991.1 generation ended over a decade ago. Porsche did offer a limited-run 992.1 Sport Classic with a manual and rear-wheel drive, but it was based on the standard Turbo, not the more powerful Turbo S. This suggests limitations of the manual gearbox in handling the Turbo S’s immense torque.
Powertrains and a Possible Manual Transmission?
While increased power and torque for the Turbo and Turbo S are anticipated, it’s unclear if the 3.6L hybrid engine will replace the current 3.7L unit. The biggest question mark surrounds the rear end. Speculation suggests a GT3 Touring-like package or a return of the manual, rear-wheel-drive Turbo. One theory suggests the 992.2 Turbo will receive the hybridized engine and a manual option, potentially with rear-wheel drive. However, the manual’s availability with the hybrid system remains uncertain, as the Carrera GTS with its T-Hybrid system lacks a manual transmission.
Beyond the transmission, enthusiasts are eager to see how the potential hybrid system might affect performance. The electric motor in the Carrera GTS fills in low-end torque gaps, potentially leading to even more ferocious acceleration in the Turbo. However, the added weight of the hybrid components could counteract some of the performance gains.
Looking Ahead towards the next 911 Turbo
With only rumors circulating about the 992.2 Turbo, enthusiasts can only hope for a return of the manual, rear-wheel-drive variant. The possibility is exciting, considering Porsche hasn’t offered such a configuration in a mainstream Turbo model for quite some time. This return to driver engagement could solidify the 992.2 Turbo’s place as a true enthusiast’s dream car, blending cutting-edge technology with the raw connection of a manual transmission.
