Three pedals and a stick could be the ultimate analog surprise with the upcoming 992.2 Turbo
by Khris Bharath on July 1, 2024, 10:00In a recent video, Porsche aficionado and YouTuber ARC Driver dove headfirst into a potential mystery courtesy of Porsche themselves. While configuring a 911 on the Porsche website, ARC stumbled upon an image that piqued his interest. Initially appearing as a standard 911 silhouette, a closer look revealed some intriguing details. Wider rear fenders, a prominent turbo intake, and a unique ducktail spoiler whispered "New car alert." Unlike the rest of the blacked-out silhouette, the entire spoiler was rendered in grey, fuelling speculation of a deliberate hint from Porsche.
What We Know So Far About The Upcoming 992.2 911 Turbo
We already know Porsche is developing the 992.2 Turbo, but ARC Driver ponders if there’s more to the story. One theory revolves around the long-rumored, stripped-down, rear-wheel-drive, manual-transmission Turbo that enthusiasts have been dreaming of. This image, according to ARC, throws some doubt on previous skepticism. Another possibility? The Turbo S Touring with its wing deployed. However, the standard Touring wing typically sticks out prominently, whereas this one seems to integrate more seamlessly with the bodywork.
Porsche recently revealed the 992.2 Carrera and hybrid 911 GTS models. This beast boasts a significant engine upgrade, swapping the 3.0L twin-turbo for a 3.6L single-turbo setup with an electric twist. This new turbo promises both improved responsiveness and efficiency, achieving faster spool-up times and extracting more power from exhaust heat.
While horsepower gains are modest, rising from 473 to 478, the true story lies in the performance improvements. Torque figures hold steady at 420 pound-feet, but the new engine delivers a wider torque curve for a smoother and more enjoyable driving experience. The surprise? For the first time, an electric turbo nestled between the engine and transmission, adds an extra 64 horsepower and a significant torque boost. This combination pushes the total system output of the first-ever production Hybrid 911 to a remarkable 532 horsepower and 449 pound-feet of torque.
Despite the addition of electric components, the new GTS weighs just 103 pounds heavier than its predecessor – a testament to Porsche’s engineering prowess. The result? The new GTS absolutely dominates the Nürburgring, shaving nearly 9.0 seconds off its predecessor’s lap time.
Porsche has remained tight-lipped about the upcoming 992.2 Turbo. While sightings of some S models and possibly a base Turbo have emerged, details remain scarce. Rumors suggest a hybrid S model alongside an internal-combustion-only base Turbo as horsepower figures remain shrouded in secrecy. But for now, it’s a guessing game, although ARC Driver suggests there could be at least four, or even more, variations of the 992.2 Turbo in the pipeline.
