A 944 unlike anything else out there, this one-off creation that took 2,500 man hours to complete, can now be yours
by Khris Bharath on September 26, 2024, 11:00When you hear the word Porsche, a truck is probably the last thing that comes to mind. But that’s exactly what we have here. A custom Targa pickup based on a 1987 Porsche 944 coupe. Currently based in Germany, this strange creation is now up for sale on Elfersport, and here’s what you need to know about it.
This Custom 944 Pickup Was 26 Years In The Making
First, some context. Now, high-performance Sports trucks aren’t a new concept and we’ve seen many come and go over the past three decades. The GMC Syclone may have started this trend in the early 90s, but the segment though small, has evolved quite a bit, and in the age of electrification, you have no shortage of fast trucks from the likes of Ford or GM, with the Cybertruck sitting at the top. I’ve always wondered why Porsche never took a dig at this segment, especially in the United States, where clearly a small, but niche market exists. The Cayenne could have served as the ideal basis for such a model. I know that a prototype of a strange Cayenne convertible exists, but a production Porsche truck never hit the road.
However, we do have some unique one-off creations like the 2003 Bedouin Concept and some folks who’ve taken things into their own hands by chopping up a first-gen Cayenne. As for this vibrant 944 S6 Pickup finished in Continental orange with contrasting black bits, it was transformed in stages between 1995 and 2021. At first glance, it actually reminds me of an Aussie UTE. Yeah, remember those sleek coupes with a bed, that were based on models like the Holden Monaro or Ford Falcon? Not sure if this 944’s four-cylinder heart can emulate the Aussie UTEs that were capable of drifting, but the car seen here packs a 3.0-liter four-cylinder from a 968. This was one of the most four-cylinder powerful plants from Porsche’s trans-axle era, besides the V8 found in the 928.
While things look pretty normal upfront, besides the Renndienst stickers, the most obvious thing on this particular build is the 6x6 setup, with the axles from an Audi 200 Turbo. A lot of custom bodywork was required to achieve the pickup truck body. Look closely and you’ll see how the flared rear wheel wells extend further back to accommodate the additional axle.
The extra-axle, also means you get a longer bed with custom oakwood paneling, for hauling longer items I’m assuming. With the bed taking the place of the now chopped-up and missing rear section of the original car, you now have a rear window for what is essentially the cab. But just when you thought that things couldn’t have gotten weirder, what you’re looking at is a custom 944 6x6 with a Targa Top. You also get a purpose-built storage box for that Targa top. Anyway, if you fancy this one-off creation, which is up for sale at € 99,990 ($111,471.57) check out the listing here. Yes, I know that’s a lot more than you’re run-of-the-mill 944, but this is a one-off creation that took nearly 2,500 man-hours to build.
