2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray - The Corvette Delivers Its First Electric Shock

Don’t panic, muscle fans - the Corvette hasn’t gone fully EV just yet. Instead, the 655 hp, 6.2-liter LT2 V8 gets help from an e-motor to launch it from 0-60 in just 2.4 seconds. But is this enough to outpace the Z06?

The Chevy Corvette’s history in the American muscle car world is significant, and the eighth-generation model is just a serious step up from what the car used to be. Debuted in 2019, the C8 Corvette transitioned to a rear-mid engine layout, reminiscent of those pesky Italians, giving Chevy the ticket to enter the supercar realm.

Now, the Corvette features a palette of models similar to that of the Porsche 911; well, it’s not quite as diversified, but you get it. There’s the base Stingray, which starts as low as $66,300, the track-focused Z06 model with its flat-plane crank V8, and finally, the E-Ray, the first electrified Corvette ever.

Unveiled in January 2023, the Corvette E-Ray is the perfect option for you if you crave the performance of a 911 Turbo S but don’t want to burn a hole in your pocket. Starting at just under $103,000, the E-Ray is an all-wheel-drive Corvette that cranks an awesome 655 horsepower out of a V8 and an e-motor powering the front axle.

Performing like a power enhancer rather than a planet saver, the Corvette E-Ray is, by far, the best Corvette model if you seek a supercar that’s both fast and reliable and wouldn’t give you back aches like the Z06.

A Corvette that’s quicker than a Lambo

Since its inception, the Corvette has been strictly a front-engine rear-drive car until the C8 generation popped up, shifting the engine to a rear mid-mounted position. This allowed the Corvette to not only manage better weight distribution and traction but also opened doors for a strong hybrid.

The Corvette E-Ray is powered by the same 6.2-liter naturally aspirated LT2 V8 as the standard Stingray with the Z51 package, pushing out 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The V8 drives the rear wheels only via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

But the E-Ray has a trick up its sleeves — it sports an electric motor on the front axle, propelling independently. The e-motor can churn out a maximum of 160 horses and 122 pound-feet of torque. Hence, making the E-Ray all-wheel drive.

Together, the e-motor and the LT2 cook a staggering 655 horsepower and 592 pound-feet of torque. If we compare the numbers to the range-topper Corvette Z06, the E-Ray is shy of 15 ponies but gains more torque — 132 pound-feet to be precise, thanks to the front-axle mounted e-motor.

So, does the added torque and the advantage of an all-wheel drive get the Corvette E-Ray any quicker than the Z06? Well, unlike the Z06, the E-Ray launches like a rocket, getting to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds. It doesn’t struggle off the line like the Z06, meaning it’s all about effortless acceleration. If you compare the E-Ray’s 0-60 mph timing with that of the 789-horsepower Aventador Ultimae, the latter does the same in 2.7 seconds. As for the top speed, the Corvette E-Ray tops out at 183 mph.

The most efficient Corvette ever?

Electric motors are like hidden heroes, especially when you’re smoothly cruising down the highway. It’s like gliding in a Stingray but with the bonus of better gas mileage. If you’ve driven a Stingray before, you’ll notice how the E-Ray hangs out more in the eco-friendly V4 mode, all thanks to the electric boost. On easy roads and even gentle slopes, you can press the gas a bit more before the car switches back to full engine power, with the electric motor picking up the slack. This gives you a moment to enjoy the unique rumble that reminds you of the less expensive four-cylinder cars, especially when you’re just cruising.

But that’s about as traditional as this hybrid gets. There’s a smart system that turns the engine off and on at stops, which is pretty neat because you get to hear the engine’s roar each time. However, using the EV mode is a bit of a hassle. You’ve got to set it up while parked, and if you forget to adjust the drive mode before starting the car, there’ll be no silent sneaking around for you. It’s a bit of a letdown, especially if you’re trying to leave or return home quietly, but it’s still a nice touch for a Corvette. For the first time, the Corvette can become a front-wheel drive car, driving for three to four miles on electric propulsion only.

Also, you might hear that the added weight of the E-Ray might eat into the fuel savings, but from some independent tests, we can confirm that’s not entirely true. The Corvette Stingray, even with the cylinder-deactivation enabled, averages around 17 MPG, while the hybridized E-Ray can easily show numbers over 20 MPG. These are not huge numbers, but they’re quite impressive, given the power on tap.

And don’t worry about running out of battery power. Even though the battery is small at just 1.1-kWh, it’s tough to drain it completely unless maybe you’re on a racetrack with long stretches. In everyday driving, it recharges so quickly that you’ll hardly notice any dip in performance, and you probably won’t even need to use the special Charge+ feature that’s supposed to boost the battery level for more electric juice.

A Z06 body minus the rear wing

The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, with its broad shoulders reminiscent of the Z06, is a marvel that’s 3.6 inches wider than the Stingray, all to fit those beefy tires that handle its impressive torque like a champ. It’s drenched in the classic C8 Corvette vibe, flaunting those timeless mid-engine supercar lines that can easily hold their own against the high-end Italian beauties.

But the E-Ray has its own flair, too! It sports a snazzy body-length stripe in Electric Blue that’s all its own. With carbon flash badges coming as standard and a palette that boasts fourteen vibrant colors, including the fresh Seawolf Gray, Riptide Blue, and Cacti. Whether it’s the carbon flash badging, those slick aluminum wheels in four different finishes, the standout stripe, or the wide color selection, the E-Ray keeps the Corvette tradition of personalization alive and kicking.

And for those who like to add a bit more edge, there’s the option of black exhaust tips, not to mention the carbon fiber ground effects and wheels that can be decked out in carbon flash, bare carbon, or even bare carbon with a cheeky red stripe.

The wheels, measuring 20 inches up front and 21 inches at the rear, come wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport all-season tires, with the option to switch to the grippier Pilot Sport 4S rubber for those track sessions.

A driver-centric cockpit

Hop into the cozy cabin of the latest Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray coupe, and you’ll notice some neat little tweaks that set it apart from its purely gasoline-powered siblings. For starters, there are a couple of fresh buttons on the console for Charge+ and start/stop, not to mention the snazzy Artemis Dipped interior. This particular shade is a lush, deep green that sweeps across most of the interior, giving it a really unique vibe. But if green’s not your thing, no worries – there are six other interior color options to suit your taste.

And for those who love a bit of flair, there are two carbon fiber trim packages to spruce things up even more. Plus, you’ve got three different styles of seats to pick from, so you can find your perfect spot to settle into.

On the tech front, the Corvette E-Ray doesn’t skimp. The eight-inch infotainment display is home to the E-Ray Performance app, which is pretty cool for keeping tabs on the hybrid system’s performance and added powertrain-related information. And, of course, a sleek touchscreen interface that plays nice with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is all part of the package.

The E-Ray also steps up its game with more driver assistance features than previous Corvettes. You’re looking at handy helpers like lane keep assist with lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and automatic emergency braking to keep your drives smooth and safe.

And if you’re worried about losing cargo space to the electric bits, don’t be – the Corvette E-Ray still boasts a very respectable 12.5 cubic feet of room for all your stuff.

First-ever eAWD Corvette E-Ray uses an advanced electrified propulsion system in addition to its 6.2L LT2 Small Block V-8 enabling all-season performance and composure — and 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds

NEW YORK – Exactly 70 years after the Corvette debuted at Motorama in New York City, Chevrolet has returned to introduce the first-ever electrified Corvette with all-wheel-drive and a powerful 6.2L LT2 Small Block V-8, the 2024 E-Ray.

“In 1953, the enthusiastic reaction to the Chevrolet Corvette concept kicked off seven decades of passion, performance and American ingenuity,” said Mark Reuss, General Motors president. “E-Ray, as the first electrified, all-wheel-drive Corvette, takes it a step further and expands the promise of what Corvette can deliver.”

Developed to be the Corvette owners can arrive in anywhere, no matter the season, the new E-Ray — available in removeable roof coupe and hardtop convertible models — uses electrification to enhance the driving experience with intense straight-line performance, all-weather confidence and sure-footed grand touring capabilities that can only be achieved with eAWD.

E-Ray is also the only sports car pairing two separate propulsion systems to provide naturally aspirated V-8 power with electrified responsiveness powered by eAWD, making it one like none.

“Corvette has been a halo for Chevrolet since 1953,” said Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet. “E-Ray’s unprecedented blend of confidence, luxury performance, sophistication and style provides a new reason for more people to experience Corvette.”

The E-Ray is the quickest production Corvette in history, clocking a 2.5-second 0-60 mph time1 before breezing through the quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds1.

“Corvettes must provide an exhilarating driving experience on backroads and tracks, and E-Ray nails it,” said Tadge Juechter, executive chief engineer, Corvette. “The electrification technology enhances the feeling of control in all conditions, adding an unexpected degree of composure.”

A near immediate feeling of thrust from low-end torque is core to the Corvette driving experience, and the E-Ray packs plenty of it. Power comes from the 6.2L LT2 Small Block V-8, putting 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque to the rear axle. It is complemented by an electric motor that channels an additional 160 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque through the front wheels via a 1.9 kWh battery pack, which is located between the seats. In total, E-Ray produces a combined 655 horsepower from both the electric motor and Small Block V-8.

The 2024 Corvette E-Ray’s electrified propulsion system provides exhilarating acceleration to power out of corners and effortlessly complete passing maneuvers. It can also provide limited all-electric propulsion at the driver’s discretion upon startup.

E-Ray’s standard Active Fuel Management system uses the electric motor to extend 4-cylinder operation in various driving scenarios.

The amount of electric assist is tailored within each of the Corvette E-Ray’s six driver-selectable modes: Tour, Sport, Track, Weather, My Mode and Z-Mode. Drivers can also select the Charge+ feature which maximizes the battery’s state of charge.

E-Ray Performance App on the infotainment system provides the driver with technical insights into how the propulsion system is operating. There are three primary display layouts:

  • Gauges (displays dynamic power output from electric motor and V-8 engine)

  • Dyno (provides graph of power/torque across selectable time intervals)

  • Data (showcases electrical system performance and efficiency).

The Corvette E-Ray’s electric motor over the front axle is compact, preserving space in the front storage compartment.

The first hybridized Corvette
The E-Ray is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 and an e-motor, pushing out 655 hp and 592 lb-ft of torque. The e-motor drives the front wheels, enabling AWD

The Corvette E-Ray’s two driver-initiated electric modes enable the car to travel under electric propulsion in certain conditions. The electric motor also optimizes track performance.

Stealth Mode enables all-electric driving, when selected at start-up, for a period of time before the engine turns on for normal driving. It is designed for quietly exiting a neighborhood, with a maximum speed of 45 mph. The engine automatically engages if the vehicle’s speed exceeds the limit, additional torque is requested by the driver, or the E-Ray’s battery pack is depleted.

When it comes to leveraging the electrified propulsion system for enhanced track performance, E-Ray’s eAWD control system applies torque to the front axle as needed. The Charge+ feature can be used to maximize battery state of charge for extended lapping.

The custom-designed Performance Traction Management (PTM) modes are optimized in concert with the eAWD propulsion system.
