RX 911: The Madness Behind This Classic Porsche's Rotary Engine Swap

From flat-six to wankel, here's how this original 911 was transformed into a rotary-powered madness on wheels

There is no shortage of bizarre project cars and this one is definitely one of the more unusual ones. NazMaz OSR, a channel on YouTube that is dedicated to cars powered by rotary engines recently showcased a very interesting project. This is especially true for those lusting after the air-cooled 911 models. Don’t let the modernized looks fool you though. Underneath, this is an early-model classic 911. For whatever reason, the owner has decided to go to town and transform it into an epic "hybrid” between a Porsche 911 and Mazda RX-7. But that’s not everything. Jeffrey, the owner of this car, has also used parts from newer 911 models to update the classic, air-cooled sports car. Some of the engineering decisions behind the build are mind-boggling, and we try to make sense of what could possibly justify turning an early-model 911 into a rotary-powered race car for the road.

Luca Trazzi's Bespoke Type-993 Speedster Is A Reminder Of Why This Forbidden Fruit Is Such A Big Deal

Unveiled at Monterey Car Week, we explore Porsche Sonderwunsch's latest creation and other custom-builds based on the 993 chassis

The Porsche 993 Speedster is often described as a unicorn in the automotive world. While the German automaker has produced over 30 different iterations of the iconic 911 over the decades, the Speedster remains one of the most unique and desirable variants to date. Unfortunately, not all 911 generations exist in Speedster form, and the Type 993 is one such example. Officially, the last air-cooled 911 was never sold as a Speedster due to Porsche facing financial difficulties in the 1990s. Now, a passionate designer and Speedster collector, Luca Trazzi turned to Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program (Special Request) to bring his vision of a Type 993 911 Speedster to life.

REEN Cars may have done the ultimate fan service by building this Mezger-powered Porsche 964

Each Porsche 911 can be considered a timeless classic. Hardcore, classic Porsche enthusiasts will most desire the air-cooled 911 models, but sometimes, mixing old with new can be an exciting endeavor. The 911 is one of the most replicated and reimagined sports cars in the world, and while Porschephiles are extremely picky about what can and cannot be done to a 911, we believe they will get behind this super-clean build. It involves a very clean Porsche 964 Carrera that for some reason, has done away with its original, air-cooled flat-six engine. Fear not.

Limited to just 27 units, this 993-based bespoke creation packs nearly twice as much power as the original 959

While the Monterey Car Week has already witnessed its fair share of automotive showstoppers, few have dared to redefine the custom aftermarket genre quite like the Kalmar 9X9 and the Tuthill GT1 this year. While the 911 restomod scene is quite mature, this trend is now extending to other iconic models from the Porsche stable. Kalmar Automotive based out of Denmark, is calling their latest creation, the "world’s first retro hypercar," a bold statement that perfectly captures the essence of this beast. Inspired by legendary cars of the past like the over-engineered 959 owing to that distinctive fixed rear wing, the 9X9 blends classic aesthetics and cutting-edge performance.

Edith: The Untold Story of Porsche's Record-Breaking Volcano Climb

Set to premiere at Monterey Car Week, the film chronicles the 911's historic climb to the highest volcano on planet Earth

Remember that insane project where Porsche tried to drive a 911 to the top of a freaking volcano? Yeah, that wasn’t some fever dream – it actually happened, and now they’re dropping a documentary about the whole ordeal. "Edith: Volcano Ascent" is about to erupt onto the scene at the upcoming Monterey Car Week. The car in question? Not a souped-up SUV, but a specially-prepped Porsche 911. We first caught wind of "Edith" back in late 2022, when Porsche was busy testing the car. Their destination and target? Ojos del Salado up in the Andes in Chile, is the world’s highest active volcano. At a lung-crushing 22,093 feet, to give you some context, even Everest’s base camp sits lower than where Porsche was aiming for. This is also the highest volcano on Earth and the highest peak in Chile.

Boxer Vs. Flat Engines: Why They're Not The Same And Here's What Sets Them Apart

A stark contrast in design philosophy separates boxer and flat engines, with the inherent advantages of one ultimately rendering the other obsolete

Boxer and flat engines are a highly-uncommon sight in the modern-day automotive industry. Currently, there are only two manufacturers that continue to produce and develop boxer engines – Subaru and Porsche. The boxer engine is most commonly characterized by its flat design hence it is, often, referred to as a flat engine. The first boxer engine was developed in 1897, by Karl Benz – the co-founder of what would eventually become Mercedes-Benz. There is a common misconception when it comes to these engines. Boxer and flat engines are not quite the same. All boxer engines are flat engines, but not all flat engines are boxer engines. This misconception comes from the 1973 Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer. Despite the name, it does not feature a boxer engine, but rather a flat-12 engine or a 180-degree "V-engine". Boxer and flat engines are more different than you think, and here is what sets them apart.

Can We Expect More Porsche Models To Pack An E-Turbo?

Besides high-end 911 models, here's why there's a chance for T-Hybrid technology to trickle down to the more popular Porsches

Porsche’s iconic flat-six engines have echoed through the automotive industry for decades, but like most high-performance sports cars and supercars, hybridization is taking over the carmaker’s revered 911 lineup. The 2025 992.2 911 Carrera GTS is the first victim of this shift, boasting a brand-new 3.6-liter single-turbo flat-six, a step up from its predecessor’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six. But that’s not all - Porsche has thrown in not one but two electric motors. One is nestled within the eight-speed PDK transmission, and the other is cleverly integrated into the turbocharger itself, helping it to spool up even without enough exhaust gas pressure. The hybrid setup has resulted in a power boost of 59 horsepower and 29 pound-feet of torque, more than the outgoing 992.1 911 Carrera GTS.
