Porsche is celebrating 50 years of Turbo lineage, with a stealthy signature shade that will feature on all future Turbo models
by Khris Bharath on September 4, 2024, 18:00Porsche has been serving up peak performance and luxury for decades, and their Turbo models have always represented the pinnacle of performance that you can actually use on the road. The first turbocharged 911 dropped in ’74 and blew everyone’s doors off. It became a legend, a symbol of pushing boundaries. Now, Porsche’s taking that same spirit and applying it to the entire Turbo lineup with this sleek, metallic grey they’re calling Turbonite, a color that we first saw on the 2023 Panamera Turbo and subsequently, the Macan EV Turbo.
The Significance Of Turbonite And What It Means For The Porsche Brand
Porsche didn’t just dream this color up in a vacuum. They teamed up with Pantone, the color gods themselves, to develop Turbonite. It’s inspired by pyrite, the mineral with a subtle bronze shimmer. It’s timeless without being boring, sporty without being obnoxious. Basically, it’s the perfect balance for a Turbo. Porsche even got Turbonite to feature in the upcoming New York Fashion Week! That’s right, a car color in a fashion trend report. Talk about breaking the mold. This is a major win for Porsche, showing that their design language transcends the garage and lands squarely on the runway.
It’s not just the Porsche crest, though. Turbonite will feature all over the car, from the trim pieces like the side window, making it instantly recognizable. Porsche says that the Turbonite treatment is model dependent and more pieces such as inlays in the front facia, the spokes, and aero blades in the wheels could also feature the Turbonite finish. The Turbonite treatment extends inside too, with accents on the dash, seats, and controls. The attention to detail here is pure Porsche – nothing left to chance, everything meticulously considered.
But this whole Turbonite thing is more than just a new paint scheme. It’s a celebration of 50 years of Turbo dominance. It’s a tribute to Porsche’s heritage while simultaneously launching them into the future of automotive design. Turbonite will eventually start rolling out exclusively to all Turbo models across the Porsche lineup. Personally, I’m a fan of this move. Given how diverse the Porsche range is today, the gold accents were starting to feel a little, well, dated and Turbonite brings a sense of sophistication and stealth, further distinguishing Turbo models from lesser Porsches.
I say stealth because, unlike the track-focused GT models, the Turbo line of cars, regardless of the model, these days are a lot more about being subtle and just silently go about leaving the competition in their wake, owing to their immense speed. No fuss. The 992.1 Porsche 911 Turbo S is the perfect example of this formula.
