Bonhams is set to auction a very special 993-generation 911 Turbo at Goodwood Revival Collectors’ Motor Cars And Automobilia. Officially named ’The Last Waltz’, it is the last air-cooled Porsche to be built and released from Zuffenhausen. An important milestone in the brand’s history, the Last Waltz was built at the factory on March 27, 1998. It’s too bad that I was only eight years old and completely oblivious to history unfolding. It was commissioned via the Sonderwunsh program for German Author Clauss Vanderborg. Jerry Seinfeld’s famed 993 Carrera 4S Cabriolet was finished and delivered on 31st March, shortly after the Last Waltz came off the line. However, the latter spent six months with the special wish wing of the brand getting specially kitted out with a bunch of aesthetic and mechanical modifications.

Hence, it still holds the distinction of being the last air-cooled 911 ever produced by Porsche. The car’s completion date, March 27, 1998, was also the day Ferry Porsche passed away at the age of 88. Clauss, a friend of Ferry’s, dedicated the car to Ferry Porsche.

  • The Last Waltz is set to go on auction at the Goodwood Revival Collectors’ Motor Cars And Automobilia on September 7th.
  • The 993 was completed on March 27th, 1998 and delivered 6th months later on 5th September 1998.
  • The 993 Turbo Coupe comes with an uprated 3.6-liter flat-six from the Turbo S with an output of 443 horsepower

The Exterior Paint Is A Spectacular Shade Of Ocean Blue

This meticulously factory-customized Porsche 911 features a range of performance upgrades, including a strut brace, twin-pipe exhausts, an additional oil cooler, and a 92-liter fuel tank. The exterior is completed in Ocean Blue, with the same shade applied on the rims and Brembo brake calipers. Inside, the Sonderwunsch department transformed the interior with Night Blue leather, extending to the switches, door latches, heater controls, and even the instrument bezels. The dials are finished in a matching shade of blue, and the interior remains in pristine condition.

There is a special metal plaque affixed on the dashboard which is inscribed with "In Memoriam Prof. Ferry Porsche" followed by a poignant quote from the 1944 German film Die Feuerzangenbowle (The Fire-tongs Bowl) -"Only the memories we carry with us are real, the dreams we spin and the desires that drive us true. But with that, we can be satisfied." in German. Porsche also added a secondary plaque to the door reveal, which reads: "Today, Clauss Vanderborg received the final classic Porsche 911 (993 Turbo) equipped with an air-cooled Boxer engine. The beat is yours forever!" Having your name inscribed by the factory, on your car, is one of the coolest perks in history.

The car came with a letter from Ferdinand Alexander Porsche attesting that the 911 Turbo was the last air-cooled 911 from the factory. Interestingly 20 years later Porsche came out with "Classic Project Gold", a one-off collector piece 911 Turbo that was created for charity using a leftover 993 shell. However, it could not be road registered, which means that ’The Last Waltz’ retains its title. Less than a year after Clauss Vanderborg took ownership, the car was sold to a private party in Japan, where it spent the next 16 years of its life. After being acquired by Belgian dealers Nijsmans Classic Cars, the Porsche was showcased throughout Europe for two years before changing hands again. The car’s subsequent owner was based in the U.K., and it is currently owned by an enthusiast based in Belgium.

Despite being built over 26 years ago and changing hands multiple times, the odometer reading remains remarkably low at just over 6,583 miles. If you want to own this piece of Porsche history, get your checkbooks ready and get ready to bid. Bonhams is going to be selling the car via the auction at the Goodwood Revival Collectors’ Motor Cars And Automobilia on 7th September. However, be prepared to shell out an estimated price of $1,050,532 (£800,000), which is appropriate for a car that is in such good shape.
