Carving up the Tale Of The Dragon, here's how a stock 911 Turbo S compares to a Corvette C8 Z06 and a GT3 RS in one key area
by Amrit Balraj on July 25, 2024, 07:00Brooks Weisblat, owner of the Drag Times YouTube Channel owns some cool and fast cars. Some of these special cars in his garage include a Ferrari SF90, a McLaren 765LT Spider, and his most recent acquisition, his Guards Red Porsche Turbo S. He recently took on the legendary Tail of the Dragon mountain pass road in Tennessee, along with some of his friends. The Dragon, also known as Deals Gap, is an 11-mile world-famous stretch of road with 318 curves popular with riding and driving clubs across the world.
Brooks is joined by some of his friends for the drive - a second 911 Turbo S, Corvette C8 Z06, 2 911 GT3 RS, a GT4 RS, a 911 CS, and a Ferrari SF90 Spider. What follows is some breathtaking 360° footage as the group of supercars tear up the canyon roads, and the best part is experiencing it from that POV.
911 Turbo S Packs Ballistic Speed Sans The Noise
The roads of the Dragon are hallowed grounds for enthusiasts and we can see why. There is some great footage from the drive as Brooks attaches his 360° camera to the rear of some of the cars in the group. Watching the footage and listening to the different exhaust notes as these beautiful machines maneuver the twists and turns of the Dragon is cathartic. The video equipment is first placed on Brook’s 911 Turbo S, which sounds fine, but only once that car gets rolling. Riding shotgun, you can hear Brook’s friend say, that he wished it had more sound. While the Turbo S is ballistic off the line, we all know that the stock exhaust doesn’t sound that great at idle, due to the soft limiter. We also get some in-cockpit footage with Brooks touching on how effortless the Turbo S is to drive, and hitting triple-digit speeds before you even realize it.
Next, we get a bird’s eye view of the C8 Corvette Z06 which was a far cry compared to the 911 Turbo S. The next perspective is from a GT3 RS which has a set of downpipes and it is fascinating to discern the deep rumble of the American-made V8 compared to the high-pitched whine of Porsche’s naturally-aspirated flat-6 engine. This view also gives us a chance to see the active aero wing with DRS in action. We wish that Brooks could have obtained some footage with the Ferrari, which was the most expensive car in the group starting at $516,295. Coming to the Turbo S, even with an aftermarket exhaust setup, it’s never going to be able to compete with the sound profile of a naturally-aspirated flat-six, because of the turbos. It is what it is.
Buring Rubber For The Greater Good
After the group stops for lunch, Brooks does a 0-60 start in the Turbo S with launch control, done away in an impressive 2.3 seconds. The owner of the Cayman GT4 RS, John Hilton decides to break in his new tires by doing some impromptu donuts. We do not know if it works, but you can be sure that he had a blast trying. The tires continue to give off smoke long after he is finished. The group gets back on the road where Brooks tries to keep up with Matt, who is behind the wheel of the Corvette.
The video ends with footage of the GT3 RS chasing the Corvette through the winding foothills. You can check out this immersive footage on the Drag Times YouTube channel or check out Brook’s Instagram handle where you can find some pretty interesting BTS footage if you are interested. The video is an excellent display of what makes these cars so special, and why the ’Tail Of The Dragon’ is called America’s most exciting 11 miles. Brooks is also a co-founder of Magden Motors, an exotic car dealership with a pretty sweet inventory.
