Now Up For Grabs: Feel The Voodoo Magic Of This Ultra Rare 911 Speedster

Often dubbed the convertible GT3, this limited-run Porsche convertible has some very unique options, but costs a pretty penny

The 911 Speedster was a special commemorative model released to celebrate Porsche’s 70th anniversary. There have been several ’Speedster models in the past, six generations of them starting with the 1954 356A. But this is the first Speedster developed by the GT wing of the company. This makes it the first convertible from the team after the legendary V-10-powered Carrera GT. However, that car was developed by a special-projects team.

Porsche only made 1948 Speedsters, a nod to the year of the company’s inception. They were sold almost immediately, which is impressive considering that each example cost $275,750 before options. The engine is a slightly modified version of the one found in the 991.2 GT3. With individual throttle bodies, 25 percent higher fuel injection pressure, and a 22-pound lighter exhaust system this engine produces 502 horsepower (from 493) and 346 pound-feet of torque from the naturally-aspirated flat-six that revs to 9,000 rpm. YouTuber Ryan Friedman recently got to drive and review a pristine example to see why these cars now demand north of $400,000 in the used car market. The fun part is, that the only transmission option is a six-speed manual gearbox which sends power to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential.

Ryan starts by walking us through folding the manual canvas top, a procedure that he claims is easier than that for the 987 Boxter Spyder. He shows us how the roof can be fully sealed under a 22-pound carbon fiber lid in the rear in under a minute, specifically designed for this car. The exterior design of the car is an amalgamation of several models - the rear of a Carrera 4S Cabriolet conjoined with the front of the GT3. The rear fender is borrowed from a GT3 Touring. The part that is unique to this car is the iconic stooped windshield which is a throwback to the classic Porsche 964 Carrera 2 Speedster and the double-bubble rear deck-lid.

This particular Speedster has a PTS ’Voodoo Blue’ shade ($12,830) on the exterior, which extends to the interior stitching, AC vents, and controls. In fact, this example is one of 230 examples with a paint-to-sample shade. This color is a part of Porsche’s slightly more expensive Paint To Sample catalog which can cost $11,430 to $12,830 extra. It adds value to this simply spectacular car, especially seen in the cold light of day. Ryan has a lot of fun pushing the car to 7000 RPM, which is an aural treat for his viewers as well.

While the exterior is a custom creation, the core driving dynamics remain largely unchanged from its GT3 sibling. The GT3’s inverted dampers are slightly softened to improve ride comfort, without altering the spring rates. This maintains the car’s handling prowess. You also get a four-wheel steering system to compensate for the missing rear wing, ensuring high-speed stability. If you are worried about the low ground clearance and scraping your front end by 1.2 inches, at the press of a button, you can use the front-axle lift system to raise the front end.

If you would like to own this car, it is currently listed on Ryan’s site for $419,995. While it’s not exactly a steal at this price, this seems to be the trending price of these models as per Classic.com.. What you are getting at these prices, is a unique part of Porsche’s history. A testament to their 70-year history making some of of the world’s best sports cars, and it’s not just any convertible, but a Speedster.
