Here's Why This 911 Is A Porsche Purists's Worst Nightmare

YouTuber Jack Morris, popularly known as Jack Ultramotive recently acquired a car he claims is the ’poor man’s GT3 RS. In one of his recent videos, he puts forward the question - has the GT3 RS finally become too mainstream? Which could explain its omnipresence on social media. Or are more people recognizing how good it is? He also explains he has never been partial to Porsches in general and his dream car has always been the Lamborghini Murcielago. Around eight months ago he realized that long-term dream and bought one.

For his next car, his only criterion was that he did not want to spend $200,000+. He wanted something budget-friendly, reliable, fun to drive, and occasionally take to the track. He settled on what looks like a 997 GT3 RS, but it’s actually a 2007 997.1 Carrera S, which he claims he got a deal on owing to its undesirable modifications, which no Porsche purist would touch with a barge pole.

Here’s Why This 911 Was A Steal

In the video we see Jack drive his Carrera S for the first time. He admires its hydraulic steering for the driver engagement. Another fun aspect about his particular example is that it is a 6-speed manual with rear-wheel drive. It’s (M97) 3.8-liter Flat-six puts out 355 horsepower, which can be bumped up to 376 with the optional X51 performance package. He cannot make up his mind if he likes the sound of the exhaust that came with the car.

Specs Porsche Carrera S Coupe (2004-2008)
Powertrain NA 3.8-L Flat-6
Horsepower 355 HP
Torque 295 Lb-Ft
Transmission 6 Speed Manual/5 Speed Tiptronic S
Drive Type RWD
0 To 60 Acceleration 4.6 seconds (Manual)/5.0 seconds (Tiptronic S)
Top Speed 182 MPH
Average Price (Classic.com) $48,278

Barring the GT3 front bumper, here are some of the controversial mods that would annoy a Porschephile. While Jack doesn’t specifically mention what he paid for this car, he says it was these bits that allowed him to get an ’amazing deal’ on this Porsche:

  • Red painted hood with carbon fiber pattern wrap

  • Matching red rear-view mirrors

  • 997.2 GT3 front fender and rear wing

  • Fabspeed straight pipe exhaust with Fister muffler

  • Aftermarket rims

Jack did state that you should be looking in the (high $30-$50k range). According to Classic.com tracking prices across the past 5 years, we can see that the Carrera S steadily holding its value, with an average price of $48,278. If you want something a little cooler, you could also get the Carrera S Cabriolet, which came with the same specs and costs the same on the used car market. Eventually, Jack plans to tastefully mod the car as per his sensibilities - modifying the stance, repainting/wrapping the car, adding better wheels, and maybe a different exhaust. But before that, he wanted to get some reactions on this car and took it to a Porsche-only Cars and Coffee in Scottsdale and he did manage to turn a lot of heads, but not in the way he would have wanted.

Some Of The Alternatives That Jack Could Have Considered For Similar Money

If you’re not a Porsche fanatic, there are some alternatives from the early 2000s that are still putting out some good numbers and can cost even less than a Carrera S:

The rest of the video sees Jack revealing his newest acquisition to his friends Zack, Jamie, and Justin. Everyone appreciates how clean the car’s body is, how it has the ’right’ transmission, and the condition of the stock paint. But his friends also agree that the wrapped hood has to go. Jack plans to take his time with the build, to create the Carrera of his dreams. Seeing some of his previous projects, like his 1000-horsepower Hennessey Exorcist, we can assume that the final result will be special.
