An AWD rivalry that goes back decades, here's how the final R35 GT-R fares against one of the quickest 911s ever made
by Amrit Balraj on June 21, 2024, 06:00Even before it first debuted back in 2007, the R35 Nissan GT-R had its sights set on the Porsche 911 Turbo, outgunning it on its home turf, i.e. the Nürburgring. While the rivalry between the two has been fierce for over a decade, Godzilla is bowing out after a 15-year reign. While production ends in the U.S. for the 2024 model year (2025 in Japan), enthusiasts can grab the final editions. The 2024 Nissan GT-R boasts a revised front fascia, grille, wings, and rear end designed to improve aerodynamics without sacrificing downforce. Nissan engineers meticulously crafted a new mesh grille for better cooling and lower drag. At the same time, the top-of-the-line Nismo version receives a more aggressive rear wing and additional aerodynamic elements. A new "Stealth Gray paint" job completes the Nismo package, marking an apt send-off for this JDM icon.
Meanwhile, the 992 911 Turbo S is one of the fastest 911s ever, with blistering acceleration, even leaving several mid-engined exotics in its wake. However, the 911 Turbo though isn’t just about brute force. Beyond its mind-bending acceleration, it carves corners with incredible grip and brings everything to a halt with awe-inspiring brakes - a total performance package. So how do these two all-wheel-drive titans form Japan and Germany stack up today? Let’s find out.
These Offer Two Different Packages When It Comes To Performance
Both models hold iconic positions for their respective brands, revered across the automotive world for their performance and rich histories. While there is only one Porsche 911 Turbo S trim, this year the GT-R comes in several trims including the base model, T-spec and Takumi special editions, the performance-focused Nismo, and the Japan-only Skyline edition.

Porsche 911 Turbo S Vs. Nissan GT-R: Performance Numbers Compared
Under the hood, these titans showcase contrasting philosophies. The 911 Turbo S wields a 3.8L twin-turbocharged flat-six engine, unleashing a ferocious 640 horsepower. Standard all-wheel-drive and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic propel the 911 Turbo S from 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 2.2 seconds, even quicker than Porsche’s claimed 2.6 seconds. The base model 2024 GT-R packs a punch with its twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6, churning out 565 horsepower and 467 lb-ft of torque. An all-wheel-drive system and a 6-speed automatic transmission ensure all that power reaches the road effectively. The GT-R rockets from 0 to 60 MPH in a scorching 2.9 seconds. The Track Edition and NISMO models offer a tuned-up engine, unleashing a beastly 600 horsepower and 481 lb-ft of torque.

The GT-R’s sharp steering, stiff chassis, and adjustable suspension transform even novice drivers into heroes behind the wheel. It boasts high-performance components like electronically-controlled dampers and Brembo brakes, with carbon-ceramic options on performance trims. Sharp handling and a chatty steering wheel, paired with sticky tires, make the 911 Turbo a master of both blistering straights and twisting corners. The 911 Turbo dials up performance in Sport mode for a more dynamic response. This activates Porsche’s suite of advanced suspension and handling technologies (PASM, PDCC, and rear-axle steering) for sharper handling, reduced body roll, and precise cornering.
The GT-R NISMO unleashes its 600 horsepower with precision thanks to a new mechanical front limited-slip differential that works in harmony with the rear diff. This enhanced system aids in carving perfect lines through corners. The NISMO’s specially tuned suspension prioritizes razor-sharp agility and handling without sacrificing comfort. Custom springs and Bilstein dampers ensure exceptional grip and a progressive response when pushed to the limit.
