GT2 Vs. GT3: What’s The Difference Between The Two Race-Bred Porsche 911s?

While Porsche's motorsport-inspired 911s share a common origin, find out why they're worlds apart under the skin

The world of high-performance Porsche 911s can be a thrilling yet confusing entity. Among the most coveted models are those bearing the legendary "GT" designation, a badge signifying a lineage rooted in motorsport. "Gran Turismo," meaning "grand touring," refers to a time when comfortable yet capable sports cars were purpose-built for endurance racing. Porsche, recognizing the value of this proving ground, embraced GT racing early on with cars like the 356 A 1500 GS Carrera GT in 1957, followed by icons like the 356 B 1600 GS Carrera GTL Abarth and the 904 Carrera GTS.

In the mid-90s, motorsport’s governing body redefined GT classes, giving rise to the GT2 and GT3 categories. The GT2 class became increasingly important for Porsche’s racing efforts, thanks to rules that aligned the cars closely with their road-going variants. This allowed Porsche to showcase its engineering prowess by building customer race cars like the GT3 RSR, GT3 R, and the GT3 R Hybrid.

Even today, Porsche continues this tradition with cars like the GT3 Cup, offering drivers worldwide the chance to compete successfully in various motorsport events. As enthusiasts, we want this close connection between Porsche’s customer race cars and its road cars. However, what exactly differentiates the 911 GT2 and the 911 GT3? Are they the same car underneath the skin? Which 911 generations featured the GT2 and GT3? Let’s delve into their origins and what exactly sets them apart.

GT2 Vs. GT3: Key Differences

While the Porsche 911 GT2 and GT3 might seem like close siblings, there are some key differences under the hood. Interestingly, even though GT2 race cars technically sit a class below GT3, they pack a more potent punch. Since day one, the 911 GT2 has been all about brutal turbocharged power. It borrows the twin-turbo flat-six from the 911 Turbo, but cranks things up to eleven for maximum horsepower. On the flip side, the GT3 models get high-revving, naturally, aspirated flat-six engines derived from motorsport. These engines love to scream towards the redline, delivering power more linearly and responsively.

Also in the comparison table below, take a look at a generation the 991 generation, which offered both RS models for the GT2 and GT3. Beyond the powerplants, you’ll notice that the GT3 produces more downforce than the GT2 RS. Think of it like this: The GT2 cars are built for outright speed on faster tracks, while GT3 cars focus on aerodynamic grip and cornering prowess.

This philosophy translates to road cars too.

Feature 991 GT2 RS 991 GT3 RS
Engine 3.8L twin-turbo flat-6 3.8L naturally aspirated flat-6
Horsepower 691 hp 500 hp
Torque 553 lb-ft 339 lb-ft
Drivetrain Rear-wheel drive, 7-speed PDK Rear-wheel drive, 6-speed manual (optional 7-speed PDK)
0-60 mph 2.8 seconds 3.2 seconds (manual), 3.0 seconds (PDK)
Top Speed 211 mph 191 mph (manual), 193 mph (PDK)
Downforce 750 lbs at 211 mph 770 lbs at 186 mph
Curb Weight 3,328 lbs 3,162 lbs (manual), 3,175 lbs (PDK)

This difference in engine philosophy leads to a noticeable gap in torque. The turbos in the GT2 give it a hefty dose of low-end grunt, making it a monster off the line. The GT3, while still plenty quick, builds its power more gradually. To put things into perspective, the latest 992 GT3 Touring puts out a respectable 510 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque. The previous generation 991 GT2 RS? A whopping 691 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque! That made it the most powerful production 911 ever…until a new 992 GT2 RS arrives, that is.

Historically, there’s been another interesting distinction: gearboxes. Early GT2 models were hardcore, purist machines with manual transmissions only. It wasn’t until the 991 generation that Porsche finally offered a PDK dual-clutch automatic in the GT2 RS. The GT3 followed a similar trend, starting with manuals and eventually offering PDK as an option. One thing both cars share is rear-wheel drive . It’s a classic Porsche formula that keeps things exciting and pure, just like their racing counterparts. Porsche’s GT line of models are also about Nürburging records. GT2 and GT3 Models Across 911 Generations

911 GT2 RS 997 2010 - 2012
911 GT2 RS 991 2017 - 2019

It may sound unusual, but the first 911 GT2 arrived a generation before the GT3. The original 911 GT2 debuted with the 993 generation , with only 57 examples made. Then came the 996 GT2 with the "fried egg" headlights, followed by the 997, and finally, the 991 GT2 RS. While the 997 generation offered both the GT2 and the GT2 RS, the 991 generation only had the GT2 RS.

An important note about the 911 GT2 is its rarity. You can find more 911 GT3 and GT3 RS models on the road, but only a handful of GT2s. For example, only 1,000 examples of the 991 911 GT2 RS were produced, for the 992 generation, Porsche is extensively testing the forthcoming 911 GT2 RS, so you can expect it to arrive later this year or by the first quarter of 2025.

As for the GT3, Porsche introduced it first with the 996 generation 911. The more focused and aerodynamically advanced GT3 RS models arrived with the 996.2 facelift. Later, starting with the 997 generation, Porsche offered the standard GT3 and the raucous GT3 RS together. However, with the 991.2, Porsche debuted the 911 GT3 with the Touring Package. Porsche continues to offer this sweet deal because it marries Porsche’s motorsport roots (thanks to the screaming naturally aspirated flat-six) with the simplicity of the regular 911 for daily use.

As the current state of the 911 GT3, Porsche just debuted the 992.2 generation. And while the carmaker is busy with hybridization and digitalization, Porsche thankfully continues to retain the naturally aspirated flat-six that we know and love, along with the six-speed manual gearbox.
