Here's Why This Porsche 550 Spyder 1:8 Scale Model Costs $30,000

A limited-run model, this 550 Spyder by the Amalgam Collection has a Hollywood connection with a fascinating story

Now, while I’m a man of simple pleasures, I have my indulgences and one of them happens to be automotive scale models. You know the little plastic and metal things that sit on your desk, gathering dust and occasionally falling victim to the vacuum cleaner. Anyway, recently, I acquired a 1:18 scale model of the Porsche 550 Spyder (my fourth) and it’s quite decent. Nicely painted in a rather understated shade of silver, doors, hood, and engine cover that, and even the motor look vaguely convincing. Cost me about fifty bucks. Not bad value, you might think. But then I stumbled upon this… this… thing from the Amalgam Collection that costs $30,000 and I found myself compelled to dig deeper into why the sky-high price tag.

This $30,000 Porsche 550 Spyder Scale Model Has A Hollywood Connection

The Porsche 550 Spyder is a vehicle of significant historical importance, not least because of its association with the late Hollywood icon James Dean. 550 by the way was the weight in kilograms, (1,212 pounds), which when coupled with the 1.5-liter flat-four boxer-powered sports car with 110 horsepower, to a top speed of 137 mph, earning it the nickname, ’The Giant Killer’. The 550 Spyder dominated at races like the La Carrera Pan Americana and the Targa Florio in Italy.

Anyway, about this particular model 550 Spyder by the Amaglam Collection it’s not just any other scale model oh no. Limited to just 30 examples, this one draws inspiration from James Dean’s 550 Spyder (chassis 550-0055.) It’s a 1:8 scale, which means it’s a lot bigger than the one I have. Remember in the world of scale models, the smaller the number the bigger the size. If you think about it a 1:1 is the real thing.

Dean’s car bore the race number 130 and the moniker "Little Bastard" emblazoned on its rear. This was a nickname adopted by Dean after Jack Warner (Warner Bros) once referred to him as a little bastard after Deab refused to vacate his temporary East of Eden trailer on the Warner Bros lot.

Now, I’m no stranger to the appeal of a celebrity, but $30,000 for a model car? That’s actually more than I paid for my first car, and it certainly has a lot more than just four wheels and a steering wheel. Apparently, it takes over 4,000 hours to develop and over 400 hours to build. Four thousand hours! That’s like… over half a year of solid work. To give you some context, Amalgam actually went to the length of making accurate digital scans of the original chassis and then 3D printing thousands of parts based on the real thing, prior to assembly.

They worked with Porsche’s engineering and design teams on things like the paint code and other finer details, to ensure that the model is an accurate representation of James Dean’s 550 Spyder. They even include a tiny, hand-painted James Dean figure,** because, you know, the car just wouldn’t be complete without a miniature version of the man who tragically met his demise in it. Some even say that the car was actually cursed.

Turning to full-sized vehicles, the Porsche 550 Spyder is exceedingly rare, with only 90 units produced between 1953 and 1956. Original models command prices in the multimillion-dollar range, making them inaccessible to most enthusiasts. A genuine 1955 model sold back in ’22 for a cool $ 4.185 million, making it one of the most expensive Porsches to sell at auction! Clearly, it is a collector-grade automobile.

Given that not all of us have that sort of money to burn, replicas have gained popularity, offering varying degrees of authenticity and craftsmanship at more attainable prices. The average price for a replica 550 according to classic.com is $47,000. For what? To drive it? Probably not. These things are more likely going to be trailer queens, lovingly maintained, and occasionally dusted off for a weekend show.

Now don’t get me wrong, I understand the appeal of high-end scale models. They’re beautifully crafted, often with incredible attention to detail and the thing I like about Amalgam in particular is how they work with the manufacturer to handcraft scale models of historical significance. But here’s the thing. At thirty thousand dollars, beyond the repica 550s that I just mentioned, look hard enough on the web and you could buy a perfectly serviceable used car for that sort of money. Hell!! You could even buy a decent used Porsche for that sort of money, 996 Carreras and Cayman/Boxters aren’t out of reach.
