Next-Gen Porsche Hypercar: Where Is The 918 Successor?

With changing market trends and a slowdown in EV sales, we wonder if Porsche will follow through with its all-electric Mission X concept or consider alternative power plants instead

When it comes to Halo supercars, Porsche is lagging behind its competition

Evolution of Halo Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren Halo Supercars

Porsche has a long-line of motorsports-derived super sportscars

So what do we know about the successor to the 918 Spyder?

We've seen several Porsche concept halo cars in the last decade

The most note-worthy of which is the all-electric Porsche Mission X

The space-age-looking all-electric concept broke cover in 2023 and Porsche called its first-ever hypercar

What could potentially become the 918 successor is not your regular EV

Compared to the 918 Spyder 608 horsepower, the Mission X is rumored to be twice as powerful

It sports an insane power-to-weight ratio of 1 hp per, 1kg (2.2 lbs) and produces more downforce than a GT3 RS

So if we assume Porsche hits the sweet spot with 1,500 kgs (3,300 pounds), that would equate to 1,500 horsepower

It also features a 900-volt charging architecture that can charge the battery pack to 80% in 20 minutes (twice as quick as a Taycan Turbo S)

But given the slow-down in the EV market, will Porsche still choose the electric route for its next halo hypercar?

There's a reason why Rimac (now-Bugatti-Rimac) to struggling to sell its Nevera hypercar which is destined for only 150 examples

Other exotic automakers including Bugatti feel customers aren't ready for electric hypercars yet which is why the new Tourbillion is a hybrid

Even McLaren and Ferrari are sticking to internal combustion power primarily (yes they are hybrids) with the W8 and F80 respectively

Porsche themselves have also scaled back on their ambitious 2030 EV ambitions

In an interview with the Drive, designer Michael Mauer said: “Porsche always had a good understanding of using the best solution for the time in order to create the best car.”

Mission X's project lead, Michael Behr, said earlier this year in March “only time will tell” if Mission X makes production.

What about Porsche also following suit with a Hybrid as well?

Several major automakers have taken the hybrid route

Porsche has showcased the 919 Street concept based on the LMP1 racecar back in 2017

It packs a 2.0-liter V4 gas engine coupled to a 400-horsepower electric motor for a combined 900 horsepower

We know the upcoming 992.2 Turbo will feature Porsche's T-Hybrid powertrain

Perhaps a beefed-up version of the T-Hybrid powertrain could serve as the basis?

Ultimately Euro 7 Emissions would dictate the future of Porsche's next-gen halo car

Porsche's high-volume production prevents it from qualifying for the exemption granted to ultra-low-volume manufacturers by the EU

So it begs the question, will a 918 Spyder successor be feasible at all?
